Many thanks for the excellent instructions - just fixed the same roof fault on my wife's E89 (2011 23i)
Symptoms were:
- failed on closing at the point the rear window section starts to lower from above the roof
- failed on opening at the point the roof was fully stowed and the windows should start to close

I guess in terms of diagnosis of the problem these are a big clue - both of the "stalls" are at the point the ECU needs to check the boot (trunk) lid is fully closed before allowing the next operation to start.

Also, occasional roof fault light (and bong) on the instrument cluster when driving along.

2 new microswitches bought, cheapest I could find were from BMW dealer (I used Syntner BMW Warwick) - £57 each.
Both pairs of M3 screws (attaching the microswitches to the bracket) had to be drilled out and replaced.

Roof worked perfectly when everthing was reassambled, no more problems or spurious fault lights.

Hi,I have the A696 right rear microswitch fault, have just bought the car and have found that a new microswitch has been 'installed' - it has been plugged in and left loose in the boot with a cable tie holding it open to allow the windows and boot lid to operate.
I want to install the microswitch into its correct position. My question is - Can you fit the switch with the bootlid in its normal position, or does it have to be opened the opposite way? ( As if the roof were opening). If so, how do I get the bootlid to this position if it is not operational.

Have had E85 Z4's for the last 10 years, have just bought a 2011 E89 and am keen to sort the roof

Thanks in advance for any help / assistance
