Surely if they're going to ransack the house looking for the keys it's going to happen, and nothing you can do about it, leaving them on show doesn't guarantee they won't go through everything anyway. I don't even leave spares at home when I'm not there, I'd rather my house ransacked and the car not be stolen than it stolen as well!

If a car thief is intent on stealing your car there is probably little we can do to stop them. I think all we can do is try to make it less easy and so a less desirable option by putting deterrants in the way. Things such as house alarms, driveway gates, gravel driveways, cctv, steering wheel locks, driveway security posts/bollards. Perhaps not all of them but you get the idea.
If they can't get yours easily they may move on to a softer target.

I used to take my keys up to bed with me, but now with kids I leave them in a fairly obvious place.
If they want a car I would rather they left the house a quickly as possible, even if that means my car goes to.
It's funny when this topic has come up in other forums as there tends to be 2 camps, the have a go heros who say they keep a baseball bat under their pillow and those who leave the car keys so they can be taken easily. I think if I was woken up dazed at 2am they can happily have the keys and go quickly. Trashing the house looking for keys is far worse for me than losing the car, house is my castle and that.

I leave the keys to both my cars in full view , I'll let the insurance pay for the car and keep my own teeth .
Surely a good old fashioned house alarm is still a good deterrent, especially at night in an occupied house. At the end of the day thieves don't want to attract the attention of neighbours etc. Maybe I'm not the norm these days, but if I hear an alarm during the night (car or house) I get out of bed to see whats going on. Yes I'm being nosey, but its also the decent, neighbourly thing to do and you hope others would do the same for you. Especially on my Cul-de-sac, two of the neighbours are coppers! 
Its amazing what cars get stolen in this day and age. One of the clients of my hairdresser had their 535d M Sport stolen recently. Not a new or even remotely nearly new car. It was an 06 plate with 135k on the clock. Apparently he had it on trader when someone phoned up and made an appointment to see it the next day. That night it vanished off his driveway. I'm assuming its OBD theft as he still has all the keys and the house was untouched. Guess what, buyer never showed the next day and the line just rings out! Seems a bit extreme for a high mileage older car surely could only be worth £5k max.
