so, the z4m is back to my preferred dealer today to see if the wierd click, click sound that has been troubling me (and probably the cause of excessive battery discharge - mitigated by nightly Ctek trickle charging) can be fixed. He is hoping.

well after a 90 mile motorway run on saturday - and leaving car parked up for 4.5 hours I got back in and in a few yards saw..... yes the EML light come on.. for crying out loud....in my 2.5 years ownership (bought AUC second hand at 24k miles) and a further 31k miles its had two O2 sensors go in the first 12k of my ownership, a BMW PUMA for a third, and then 9 months ago a fourth... and now it'll be a fifth....

in the style of letters page newspapers..

Is this a record?

Hmm what is it about these O2 sensors that BMW can't get right. Have you changed fuel a lot or something? I am sticking to 99 for the time being because I only do a few miles in the ///M.

Mike,

Indeed the frequency of occurrence is bizarre. Fuel - nope always BP 97 stuff.

Anyway, car has been in all week and will (hopefully) be out late tomorrow. I'll update more fully at weekend. But its had a fair going over from my 1 min conversation this evening.

I think I'd prefer your situation of multiple sensors than having a whole new engine as I did - as despite all the problems you seem to be having with them at least you won't have any problem with needing to convince a potential buyer that having lots of new bits fitted is not a bad thing, as I guess you wouldn't even think of mentioning them :headbang:

well, car is still in garage until next week undergoing a PUMA.... see http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=349739 - the O2 sensor issues they are working hard at as its been so recurring.

the clicking keeps throwing up error codes - have to wait to find out more there.

mmm-five....i'll have car for anoter 3 years at least I reckon.... it will in all likliehood have a bmw warranty until then ...so to be honest... up toa buyer to speak to BMW about work. I'll hav run to the hills if its not runnig without problems by then.

I'm still waiting for - but no longer expecting - the final report into my 'failure'.

The reason I'm not really expecting to be provided with one is because despite being told that the engine was going back to BMW AG for analysis, it was last mentioned to me that it had already been 'scrapped'. Only for the next person I spoke to telling me that they were still waiting, and then the next person claiming it'd been 'binned once more.

I've given up getting a straight answer out of the dealer in question, and BMW UK claim to know nothing about it other than having a straightforward warranty claim for a new engine which was done and closed as far as they're concerned - with no further action outstanding.

I've got a copy of warranty repair invoice which I was never supposed to see, and only managed to get that because they were about to close due to bad weather and the receptionist gave me a copy to save bothering the service guys, so I think that's all I'll get outof this dealer.

///M you are entitled to have copies of all paerwork and nil invoices related to warranty work on your car. My daughter had extensive work on her Mini over multiple visits and the dealer confirmed BMW policy is to provide it to the customer.

I know I'm entitled to them, and that's why I physically drove to the dealership in the snow of December 2009 to request them personally, as phone calls and letters had no effect.

It was either incompetence on their part, or they were trying to hide something. Either way, I've got a copy of the invoice now, but am not expecting any 'report' per se.

so, an update of sorts.

1. EML light ...car has been in dealer two weeks and BMW has authorised the replacement of both lambda sensors instead of the ubiquitous oxygen sensor...(?) oh which the car has had 6 off in 55K iles...we'll see if this makes a difference.

2. on the clicking.... we'll seem they think it is a loose pipe behind dash.... mmmm? turns out the new bosch silver 120 quid battery I put in at end of november is now knackered according to bmw garage. so went to halfords to day and yes it is.... their bosch tester threw up same fault as bmw garage found. so i've a new bosch installed today. chance of a new bosch battery being busted?

garage are speaking to bmw about a goodwill repair of the loose pipe as goodwill for the six o2 sensors....

i'm scratching my head on this clicking....

garage are proposing to charge for the roadtest and battery test to diagnose the clicking after I told them about issues.......

I'll hear about car going back in next week on goodwill.....

how they think it is a loose pipe/mechanical noise is baffling.... 15 mins back in car and it is clear it is has origins in electrics... so with new battery I'm not going to recondition it and nights/weekend.....and my hunch is that by end of next week new battery will be dead.

its madness really... treated like tool at each BMW garage and yet...this one car has spent more time (in last 2.5 yrs) in garage for repair that my last six cars over 15 years combined....and you can thrown into that mix two Fiats and an Alfa.

Hmm unbelievable really, wonder what this clicking will turn out to be :scratchhead:

O2/lambda is same thing - there are 4 altogether, 2 on the manifolds and 2 on the cats.

Bad news when a car is less reliable than a Fiat :(

mike - indeed....given the propensity for o2 failures..there is a more fundametal problem than the sensors themselves.

IMHO the clicking is a subset of the types clicks you get when the the battery is bust. time will tell....but i think why a bosch battery has busted itself in two months
