How bloody good are these cars?

Please excuse my gleeful ecstatic euphoria...I have been out this evening just before sunset, dropped my wife at a restaurant to meet some friends. Decided to take the longer scenic route back home, I was reasonably bagged up, dropped the top put the bum warmer on and let her go on some very quiet country lanes.

I have a 20i and I swear to god someone slipped a 30 litre in there when I wasn't looking, in sport mode she went like a rocket and the exhaust note was excellent, down the lanes with the trees over hanging it was like being in a tunnel all the way with the exhaust rasping and popping in all the right places...

Wonderful just bloody wonderful... :D :D :D :D :D :D :D... I want to, need to, have to do that again right now.
 
sounds like you had a blast.....it was raining here on and off most of the day :(
 
How does the 2.0 lt go ? Think i might go give one a try,keep reading great things about e89's :driving:

what engine did you have prior to the 20i if I may ask? on the test drive I preferred the 28i as the 20i lacked power IMO but everybody is different that's why car are interesting subject :)
 
You kind of loose track in what a great car you own after a while and now and then it all comes back either on a trip or a glance of the car when parked. I usually notice what a great design the Z4 is again when I walk back to it at a petrol station. :P

Is that because you'd just got the call that the missus needed her taxi home :D Seemed like a reasonable excuse to go out again...

It's my first roadster so no previous comparison...I have been a company car driver for 15 years and the last reasonable petrol engine I had was a Volvo V70 T5 (Company Car, those where the days...) I currently drive an F10 520d...lovely :thumbsup:

I think the 20i is great, but I have not done the same thing in a 28i or 35i so I can only say what I feel and I feel good every time I get in it and drive off.

I agree 100% only had her for two weeks but I think the physical attraction will last forever, the car really is a thing of beauty. It is quite unique in the sense that you can have a stunning looking car that will have major quality issue (Alfa Spider comes to mind) or you can have a super reliable car (Mercedes SLK) that looks like a real munter...to have the equipment level and quality of finish combined with the technology, efficiency and reliability within a package that looks this good is very very rare.

You are bang on, 11 o'clock last night...had to take the more sedate route though :(
 
Know what you mean, first opportunity today to have a decent drive sans roof since taking delivery and it felt great :) a bit chilly but with the experience of owning the Z3 the past 4 years with heated seats so glad I specced these as well on the Z4 :) The Z4 performed faultlessly.

Regarding the 2.0 engine, the performance is fine and doesn't really feel to be lacking, just stick it in Sport mode and your away. It feels just as quick as the 2.3 6cyl I originally test drove. For me its the best compromise between performnace and economy, I just don't want to keep my wallet permanently open if I had a 35i and isn't necessary.

If you want a buzz do a few miles in comfort mode and then switch to sport whilst motoring along, the Zed positively surges forward and comes alive.........great stuff :D

I have the 20i and never tried the 6 pots or the 28i. I did have a 2 litre e85, and in comparison to that the 20i is fast, very fast.

It always has a little extra to give. Just drop it down a gear and hover above three and a half thousand revs and its play time. At around two thousand revs it can be a little sluggish to want to respond, but soon as that turbo kicks in with sport mode on...
 
Just blasted home from work for the weekend. Part of the journey is over some undulating, twisty B roads including one very nice long straight. Caught up with a derv fuelled Astra van a few hundred yards before the straight bit and I knew instantly it was going to be amusing as, although said van was already popping along quite nicely, it took off as I approached it and by the time it was on the straight bit the black, choking smoke from the exhaust revealed the driver had pedal to the metal. I did stay behind just to see what speed he would take it to - topped out at 90 leptons and I suppose he either thought that was too fast to get past him or what his van maxed out at. Anyway, a flick of the fingers, a flex of the right foot and away we go, past the van and left it for dead - speed differential at overtake about 40 leptons - brilliant. I shouldn't really do this sort of thing at my age but, hell, it's a bank holiday weekend!
 
good information to know, more so as us e85 owners will be buying these motors once the depreciation falls off

Keep them clean and dent free please :)

When I was shopping for the E89 I had a hard time deciding what size engine. I had read about how the earlier models were underpowered and I certainly didn't want a sports car that didn't have the thrill. Sounds like the 4 cylinder may be a great combination that saves some significant costs over the N54 configuration.

Of course I ended up going with the 35is since I figured at that point "in for a penny, in for a pound." :roll:
 
Great post OP it is a great experience having a spirited drive in these things. You do tend to forget how good looking the E89 is and I totally get that look back feeling Breakers on about. Although i find i have to go to the toilet first then go and take a look back as 390+ hp in these things isnt the best thing for your blood pressure im sure. In fact I think i might have to take up an extreme sport just to relax.
 
I had my Zed out in 19C sunshine yesterday around the lakes of Fermanagh in Northern Ireland :driving:

Roads and car perfect :driving:

God I would love to know how it feels and sounds in a 35i it must be amazing... :evil:
