Issue following Clay Bar.

I have just clayed some of my Z and most of it looks great, apart from the boot lid. It looks (from certain angles) like a fine leopard skin. The paint wasn't particularly flat and it looks like the high points of the clear coat have either worn away or become scratched enough to become less glossy/hazy. I have tried gently applying some G3 but it doesn't seem to make much difference. I have applied a couple of coats of resin sealant which has improved things slightly but its far from perfect. It has only affected the boot lid, especially over the rear brake light.

Is it possible that the top coat was so thin I have gone through it? If so, is there a way to check?

You havent gone through the coat,it looks like you have used the clay without adequate lubrication and have got clay drag.

Try wetting the boot lid thouroughly as you clay again..If that fails a machine polish will remove it.
 
I tried using some Farecla G3 scratch remover on it but that didn't make any difference. It looks like the car has been wet sanded, but only on the higher peaks of the paint. I would have thought that G3 would at least start to remove some of the marks? Will the clay improve things or make things worse? I used loads of lubricant when claying. Weird thing is no other area has this problem either. I am wondering whether the previous owner had already worn the top coat, or maybe the paint on the boot isn't original?

If you are sure the clay won't make matters worse I am willing to give it another go?

Thanks for the replies. I am pleased to say that following a re-clay and a dose of vintage T-Cut for Metallics, it is looking much better. It's not perfect but thankfully I hadn't gone through the clear coat. I think I will opt for a full machine polish when funds allow. Can anyone recommend a Detailer/Valeter in the East Mids area?

I do machine polishing for friends and customers...

Im in Derbyshire so a little far away i think..
 
itguy, thanks for the offer but I am a bit nervous about touching the paint now, so I think I will entrust the task to a detailer. I am going to live with it for the time being, as I need to drive it, not mess about with it whilst we have some decent weather. :)
