Is this the end? 180k miles, £3k+ bill for suspension and universal joint?

Thanks for the quick replies guys, what's the deal with this "- Steering universal joint £1232.23"

I know nothing really about mechanicals so I'm shocked this costs so much to buy and fit.

@enuff_zed - Is this something you've seen a lot of?
I have a secondhand one in my garage, it is called a steering intermediate shaft, done 64000miles from 2003. You can have it for free!
Excellent offer!
The initial plan was to sort all the suspension and see if that cures the steering, as there is little evidence of play other than the bloke pointing and saying he thinks that's the problem.
But if we have a replacement to hand we may as well swap it out too.

Well, enuff_zed being from Norfolk, he is practically Dutch so he has to be nice

[ref]enuff_zed[/ref], I have a mate that works at car parts store that will go unnamed. It's all legit and an established business. Likely to have been used by many people here. Anyways, I rebuilt by front shocks, mounts, drop links, coils, etc last for less than 300 I think it was.
If you go ahead with helping the OP, sling me a DM with the bits and I'll ask him what he can sort and a price for it. Compare it to Autodoc then. Might help OP save more money.

I'm from Holland and didn't realise the Dutch were known as 'nice'. Not the opposite either but always figured people saw us as 'direct and dry hunoured'...

That's another great input, thank you.
Currently quoting Autodoc at 41% I have the front end at £392 all in.
Also now established that it is Sport suspension, so I don't think there are any hurdles left: down to the OP now.

Doubt my mate could do much better. Only advantage would be it's in the UK so would save on delivery time.
Let's hope the forum can save the Z4!

I'm sure we can!
Thing is: and this sounds a bit harsh for the OP: the car has done 180k. Whilst we know they'll go on for ever if properly maintained, I think he'd struggle to sell it for very much, so saving it is the best option and in reality it is basic consumable items apart from that intermediate shaft, which I'm still suspicious of.

Well 180k is just impressive I find. I've past 115k and pretty much made the decision to not sell it and try get it to 200k just for a laugh. Unless I randomly get a craving for a 350z again which seems to be often right now, or something major goes wrong with it.
Hearing him explain the steering issue, I get the same noise when I pull out of a parking space and it's cold so it did make me nervous!
I doubt they have any intention of selling it by the sounds of it :)

Well if the sound appears on full lock and it is sitting a little low on the left then it could simply be the tyre rubbing on the arch?
You'd think they would spot that though?

BTW, I also noticed that they have only quoted for new shocks and top mounts. No bump stops? Why would you not while it's apart?

No idea, you're the expert Martin :P . But as for the bumps, I assume they've factored that in. They're a couple of quid so I can't imagine they didn't...

This is all great stuff, amazing offers of help and encouragement.

If only the OP was reading it.........

He's a busy man!
However, we have come to a deal, parts ordered and hopefully dropping the car with me at the weekend.
[ref]raymond.harper[/ref], I have asked [ref]firefoxchris[/ref] to contact you about the intermediate shaft. I'm sure postage would be appreciated at least. You can send it to my address.

Wow thank you everyone, so many replies on the thread already! Sorry, it's a busy day at work so I havent been able to keep up to date until now.

As enuff_zed said, he's ordered the parts and I'm going to get the car to him hopefully this weekend. What a guy!

Wow, thank you Raymond! That is amazing. As enuff_zed said, it would be great to have this on hand as the lead times could be long if we actually need one. I could send it back to you if we dont need it. I can send you a PDF label and get a courier to collect if from you to save you having to go to a post office etc? I'll drop you a DM. Again, thank you very much for the kind offer.

Chris, it looks like you have some good options to cut the costs you've been quoted. I hope you get it fixed - E86s need to be preserved!

Yes, I'm very happy to hear there is an option here to make it feasible! Thanks to everyone for giving it the attention.

The garage just emailed back to say they cant replicate it which I am not surprised about. I think it just needs the suspension sorting before anything else is done and then we'll know where we're at. If we get to the bottom of that I will let you know - its a very rare one. Have you worked out a day to replicate it easily?

Thanks enuff_zed, so grateful for your advice and attention on this! Great to deal with people who care about these cars. Like you've said, there are little bits that can be done at the same time to avoid expensive garage labour in the future just to change a small consumable - shame the garages dont suggest that but I guess its not in their interests to save time. They've been a good garage up to this, its just too much this time!

I'm sure we'll keep you all posted on how we get on!

What a great bunch of people! :D

No worries firefoxchris. I have posted it to Norfolk and should be there on Saturday. Looks in far better condition than your one. Been sitting in my garage since 2016 so I am glad it will go to a good cause.

That looks to me like he is disposing of the murder weapon

Photo below, well worth saving... :D :driving:

After its mechanically sorted, I am planning to get the wheels refurbed and paint sorted on the bumper and bonnet, usual chips and laquer issues.

Also needs a new BMW badge on the front too, its lost some of the white! Are those easy enough to come by?

The fog lights have some condensation, is that an 'easy' fix?
