Is this right? Their 2nd attempt..

My coupe went back after I told Coopers BMW Chelmsford that the panel gaps after replacing my tailgate were not right or what they were before..
Is it better? Not by much from what I can see or am I being over picky. Any coupe owners out there can tell me or post a pic of what it should look like..its driving me crazy coz I cant remember how good it was before it went in just think I'd remember if it looked this bad!!

If it's in tolerance now there isn't a lot you can do. If still out of tolerance then take it back.

The before pic looks correct

The after pics look wrong to me, gap visually looks too wide.

Show them the before pic and tell them that's how you want it

With mine, it was the tailgate glass which wasn't properly aligned rather than the tailgate itself.

The tailgate was replaced but the same glass was removed from the old one and reused. It was the third party glass fitter who hadn't got it aligned properly rather than the body shop but what irked me was that such poor fitting was passed by the bodyshop's "quality control".

I have to say that the gaps in your photo seem to be slightly greater compared with neighbouring panels which is what I tend to look at first. When (or if) it stops raining for a moment I'll go any measure mine for comparison.

I'm afraid that I can't get the hang of posting photos now that Photobucket is playing silly devils, but have measured the following:

Tailgate glass to rear of roof 5mm. This is consistent from one side of the tailgate to the other. I can remember when mine was originally "repaired" you could look into the gap and clearly see the hinges and electrical trunking - now you can't.

Wasn't the tolerance for the roof to tailgate glass given as 6 plus or minus 1.5mm in the drawings on the last thread?

That would put the 'acceptable' (for BMW not you) gap between 4.5 and 7.5mm. I fear that the gap may be in tolerance looking at the tape in the photos. If you use a set of callipers in the gap rather than a tape over the top I suspect that this will read slightly smaller given the curve of the panel edge - BU**ER

Yours looks fairly consistent at around 7 mm but could come in a couple of mm to tighten it up

Edit - just seen the post above. Looks like yours is within tolerance although visually it looks to be a touch wide.

Blimey, u could drive a bus through that gap.
Take it back. Telltthem to sort it.
Come sale time any buyer will get suss that it's had accident repair.

I went to Munich Legends yesterday and looked at a couple of M coupes and the gaps were worse than mine!! Since they f###ked about with it the second time ive also now got a step between roof and rear screen as well!! They said the gap can only close so much or it wont clear the roof when it opens (see pic) and i can see their point but i also know it wasnt like this before. Don't know what to do, i loved this car and now it just annoys me when I look at it...
The blue and black car pics are from the M coupes at Munich Legends although they were dirty and looked like hadn't exactly been pampered their whole life.

The bad news  is that there is also a tolerance for the level between the roof and glass of 1.4 plus or minus 1mm :o if that's too much you get another chance of getting them to work on it but sadly I would be surprised if they gave you it back with any gap out of their tolerance. Not good news I know.

i genuinely think your now taking this abit to far.... The more effort and energy you give this the more it will bother you, i bet you if you went an measured all the gaps on the car half of them would be all over the place, its a mass produced bmw from an era where their quality wasn't the best. I also believe the silver car is making this seem worse than it actually is..

get it to a satisfactory gap ( which i think it it is now) and spend your efforts elsewhere.

Yeah...youre probably right. Just disappointed it didn't come back as good as it left minus the little rust patch like I expected it to. I'm annoyed with myself more than anything for not just living with a tiny rust patch you only see if the tailgate is opened and you look up underneath it. Too late now I guess..you live and learn.
