Is this paintwork acceptable

Hi all

I bought my car from an approved used dealer and noticed stonechips on the front bumper and so I asked for them to be rectified before I made my payment.
They "did" rectify the stone chip and all looked fine when I collected the car (in the rain) but after a few washes it turns out that the paint was not blended and I think the difference of paint is obvious...

I have emailed BMW UK for a response. What do you all think. I think it is inacceptable and should be rectified... especially as the car was 6months old and 29k!

Take a look at the pic

Sorry cannot see anything in the pic but thats due to the wet paint.

When you say approved BMW are you talking BMW main agent part of BMW UK only if not BMW UK will most likely want nothing to do with the prob.

Hope you get it sorted mate i found a mark at the bottom of my front bumper that was not there when i agreed to buy the car but cannot prove this so have to touch it in myself its very annoying and that was from a main Dealer.

Hope you get this sorted cash free Gaz

i can see the dif for me is unceptable take it back and tell them to make it again as the difference is shows from miles away

i had a scuff mark on the front bumper on my zed when i picked it up from the dealer - didnt notice until i got home. i would suggest you keep at the dealer and and the sales exec how you bought it from. it took my sometime to get this resolved. keep a log of all the calls and correspondents just in case they are needed.

i got a tank of fuel and the seal and protect reapplied for free. worth the trouble in the end.

Thanks for these, well I have been advised that I have to deal with the main dealership by BMW. Annoying thing is that they are in Glasgow and I am in London, but I will persevere. By rights, they should reimburse a London dealership to carry out the work properly.

As of now, the sales manager is going to "call me back"... I am waiting patiently ;-)

Keep at them, its just not acceptable. They are trying to palm you off with 3rd rate work because you live so far away they hope you'll just give up...

Give them a choice of

a) Them getting a local dealer to you to rectify the problem and them picking up the bill
b) Them collecting the car by transporter from your home and taking it back to Glasgow to be done, then returned to you.

My Toyota jeep was supplied new by a dealer in Suffolk, and I travelled from Northern Ireland to pick it up. The paint finish on the truckman top was very poor in certain areas (you could see sanding marks). Cut a long one short, dealer basically said I'd have to live with it as I was so far away.

So I called up Toyota Cust Svcs there and then in front of the guy, explained, was given a flight home, Passat hire car and my new jeep was delivered over to me in NI by transporter 2 weeks later along with mats and a loadliner fitted FOC.

As I have said previously, IMO BMW Customer Service is poor.

Is that line in right third what you are referring to? Or is that a shadow? If that's the "blend"...it's completely unacceptable. If you bought this from dealer then I'm assuming its a certified Pre-owned (CPO)? Looks like the had you sold so they did a rush job. Again...unacceptable.

You may have to argue this for a bit, but no respectable dealer would accept that type of body work.

I actually had a similar experience...but not with the dealer. The day I drove my car off the lot and parked it at the restaurant on the way home...somone keyed it. I had my insurance fix it. 6 months later after moving out of state, I saw all these "spot" or sploches. I took it to another body shop authorized by the same insurance company and they immediately told me that work was crap and they were going to repaint it for me.

Keep us up to date on this one. I hate to see others screwed over by the stealers!!!

It certainly is the right third, you are correct - that is the "blend"!!!

Well - to update you, the dealer was avoiding me - for 2 weeks they would not return my calls and then I contacted the BMW head office and spoke to a really helpful chap who then took over pestering the dealer for me and finally the manager called me this morning.

He asked me to get a quote for him for the repair work and so it sounds promising... will keep you all posted. I really hope they get the work done properly as this really is not acceptable.

just to put an update on this...
I went to my localdealer in Chigwell and was given a price of £390 to remove the bumper and spray it.
the Glasgow dealer respondedto say that they can only pay £250 and I responded to say it was unacceptable and they should cover the whole cost but I am still waiting for an answer.

sapphire_nick,

What you are seeing is what is quite correctly known as a 'blend line'. This occurs when a SMART (small to medium area paint repair) has not been carried out correctly. The dealer will have gone this route rather then a body shop to keep their profit margin up.

Good luck with the remedial work.
