Is this normal temperature

Out on Arun on the a1 today sat at a steady 80 in comfort mode wasn't really pushing it or doing lively driving just cruising at a steady a pace

Noticed the temp seemed a bit high. Never got any warnings or anything but did notice when I pulled off the m/way and sat a t the lights it did seen to drop quite quickly

Is this a normal temp for the car on a

If that worries you, don't go for a blast up an alpine pass in the summertime! The oil temperature gets HOT!
 
And as above ... oil temp will fluctuate depending on driving. My old car (not a zed) would sit noticeably higher on the mway when it was due an oil change :driving: There are some videos on youtube of people driving in Germany hitting 155 in the E89 and check how high their gauges go. All normal.
 
lol in my last 10 plate I never seen it push past 95 and no way near halfway, which confused me like mad as that like 120oc should be normal running temp. My new one is the same but I think it went to 100 wo hoo,

(light blue touch paper) does that mean I should not push the car until its 120oC but how do you get it warm if you dont push it first, and sould we not push the car until its warm which appears to be 120?
 
The Z does seem to have quite a varied temp range, but then this is my first BMW so might be normal. My understanding is that 90 degrees is normal operating temp, so the car always aims to get the engine up to or back to 90 degrees, but that the acceptable operating range is quite large, I too have seen it creep up towards 120 when pushing it.

I think despite you 'cruising' at the time, 80 might well be fast enough to keep the turbos spinning which would generate a lot of heat.

90 degrees C will be the thermostatically controlled coolant temperature. If your oil is not 'controlled' in a similar way to your coolant with an oil cooler and thermo switch then the oil temp will always vary to some extent in relation to engine speed (in fact even if it is it will vary more than coolant temp as the viscosity means it takes longer to heat up and longer to cool down). Maintaining 80mph plus on a motorway will see higher oil temps than urban driving under 50mph. Totally normal in all cars and to be expected.
