Is this normal for the engine ...?

When idling the engine seems to purr over nicely, but I've noticed when driving, (at any rev's low or high) when putting foot on the gas I can hear something spinning up, seems to be coming from the left hand side of the engine bay, when I lay off the gas, it stops.

I don't know much about the insides of an engine but it sounds like a belt of something spinning round, but its only when I put my foot on the gas, when I lift it off it stops. Is this normal or an I being paranoid. :|

It's not a massive ticking / spinning sort of noise but it's noticeable if you listen for it when driving.

Is it like a tick which increases in speed as you rev, but remove your foot from the pedal and it stops?

Yeah thats it.

At first impression it sort of sounds as if its catching something (but i dont think it is, when i popped the bonnet could see the belt going round but wasnt catching anything) as it's got gas going to it but lift off and it stops.

Firstly it is normal for the 2.0 litre engine, so don't worry.

But as for what it is....

There are lots of different answers on line, here are some;

Sound generator
Piezzo electrics on injectors
Turbo

If you search google you will find both F20 and F30 owners with this engine all omplaining, and there are quite a few threads on here too.

But bottom line, it's normal, but annoying as you tune in to it.

Again, it's normal....

You said that you dont know about the internals - Has anybody told you about looking after your turbo?

eg. Don't blip the throttle at switch off and letting it tick over for a minute or two after a blast.

I've got it too, pisses me off in heavy traffic and radio off. :headbang:
