Is this normal engine noise?

Does the engine sound like its got issues or is it me that's paranoid?

I'm thinking of trading her in tomorrow the fears that bad!

Isn't this the same video you posted the other week? :/
I don't hear a problem personally, if your that concerned take it to a garage surely.....you won't get an accurate diagnosis from a video but it sounds pretty normal to me.

Mmmm doesn't sound horrific but doesn't sound right either. But it could be the phone microphone making it sound worse. As above surely it's worth taking to a garage as you won't get its true value by part-exing. IF there is a fault it may be a cheap fix, I would never consider getting rid of a car because of an undiagnosed fault that may not even exist. Don't take this the wrong way but that is madness IMO. If you said it had a fault diagnosed and we're going to get rid, that would be more understandable.

Yeah it is the same video....i've got a trade in deal for tomorrow and if i don't go ahead with that a BMW stealer appointment on Fri.

I'm just so unsure what to do.

Thought i'd narrow the readers to actual S54 users before i took the plunge. I don't want to do the trade as i've spent serious money this yr on consumables and inspection 2 etc and really like the car but if the engines sounding a bit ticky i'd rather get shot off it, than face a 4k bill for cam shafts.

Mine sound quite ticky when warmed up.

I phoned BMW and they assured me that the valve clearance checks were done during its last inspection 5k miles ago.

Think your right bud...i need to get a pro to take a look and just take it from there. Thanks for making me see the light :)

If you've spent a fair bit of dough on it already I'm sure you can spend a few pennies getting an initial diagnosis at a reputable garage.
I'm still not sure what's supposed to be sounding 'off' about it. Camera phone's always seem to extenuate the noisy high frequency sounds so again it's very hard to say..... and nothing sounds out the ordinary, they are noisy engines by default. Do you have any symptoms as such regarding the actual driving of the car?

I noticed you have got a bit of rev dip when returning to idle though......

This is the sound of a worn follower / cam lobe:

Yeah this sounds more of a dull impact ticking / or more contact ticking...if you like.

The performance has not dropped on the car, the garage did however upgrade the DME software maybe perhaps that's why a dip in return to idle. They upgraded the DME because i kept getting O2 sensors going bad on me. Touch wood okay so far.

I'll let you all know the outcome of Fridays visit to the garage. Thanks for the advice..i feel alot better now.

I can't hear anything wrong personally (speaking as someone with some reasonable knowledge of worn followers). It is hard to video, though.

Dropped off at dealers today. Technician couldn't hear anything so took it for spirited drive and clearly on the over run you could hear the tappety noise in synch with engine revs as they fell back.

Can't really hear it on heavy acceleration due to overwhelming engine roar.

He says he took the engine cover off and the visible cam followers seem okay, he reckons it might be a valve clearance. as the car was too hot to handle i left it with them and expect a phone call next week Tues.

So hopefully not looking like the nightmare scenario of new camshafts @ £4k and potentially just another valve clearance adjustment (inspection 2 done in 12/14). Will update outcome.

Valve clearance checks were done only 4 months ago? What did they do just listen to the engine?

It's very hard to make a judgement from the video you posted, likely because we're listening to something that isn't there to hear.
Compare your car with the video I posted. With worn followers / lobes there is a obvious harder tap that stands out from the other valve gear noises. If yours is universally tappety it is unlikely to be worn followers / cam lobes unless all the follower / cam lobe pairs are shot, but then the engine would sound like a bag of old nails!

Overun noise...

Is it at the front of the engine? Could be vanos bolts or hub drive....

No the noise is coming from half way along the engine, left hand side 3/4 valve i reckon. I've heard about the dodgy standard vanos bolts and have eliminated that as a cause due to noise location.

Is it a regular, hard "Tick" distinct amongst the general ticking from the valve gear with a frequency of around 3 per second at idle?

Its a slightly harder tick amongst the valves and i would agree with the frequency 3/sec. The frequency corresponds with he engine revs and more pronounced on the over run.

If its going to be expensive i might try and get a bmw warranty before i pay up....don't know if this is possible?
