All joking aside from his accent and hair ect ect. Is he in the right? Iv been in the position his talking about how packets just don't do it for me i need hands on help for work. I think he is right we don't need all these packets and hope we get it. Im sure some get the work with them but just because most get the work doesn't mean the rest should be left on their own. If you ask me we need more people like him that care about not just their future but his fellow cclassmates. He an inspiration to me.

However, the problem is much more complex than just that one teacher. It is what the public education has become in the US... :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown:
 
It's ridiculously one sided, impossible to make a call. Events leading up to it are not clear at all. The young man is rather arrogant to say the least.

I don't know what 'packet' means in this context either.

A packet over here is basically a pile of review sheets. That are stapled together.
For instance a trigonometry packet: anywhere from 3-5 sheets of paper (problems on the front and back side of each sheet) like problem 1) what is the _ of this problem. Show your work. 3-5 papers with problems stapled together and your expected to do nothing but that through the entire class period...

Not to mention if you have a teacher like how the teacher in the video seems to be,, if you asked for help they would simply saying something along the lines of "there is instructions in the packet on how to do the problems/work" or "just look in the text book" when in reality they explain maybe a third of the problems poorly but when it comes to the more complex problems its a completely different formula. Which they expect you to understand with one example when you barely understand the basic problems... :thumbsdown:
 
I think packets are worksheets. . . . .

We didn't get the full context of the lesson or the build up to this incident but it sounded and looked like the young man was making a pertinent point!

Apparently he isn't even much for talking and the teacher cussed at him and at that point is when the video started. It seems even the principle is on his side..

In the second video I posted he even states that he noticed its not just the teacher but the educational system itself is failing students.

IMO he is exactly right. I've seen this coming since the late 1960's to early 1970's... :(
 
A lot more options and expectations in UK schools you'll be pleased to know - it's also likely that any teacher, doing their job in the manner this young man is complaining about, would end up on competency and after being given planned support for improvement, if methods/approach/outcomes didn't improve, they would lose their job.

Teaching is a very different and demanding job to the one we (anyone who went thought the education system some years ago) remember or experienced.

Jeff Bliss seems to have a valid point! I remember teachers just dishing out work and not following up weather the individual understood what was required. I would have thought standards of teaching should have improved these days as the teachers don't get much peace being watched over by Ofsted. I guess its the same in the US.
 
Its not really that the teacher/teachers nowadays just hand out work and do what they want with their free time but, its more so that some choose the profession of being a teacher because its a job. It annoys me that they do it for the money more often then not. I think we need more teachers that are dedicated to their job and did it for the whole reason we even have school... To help the new generations change the future for the better or do it because you truly care about the students. Teachers unlike that shouldn't be working in a school if they don't have the drive and passion for their job. But in the end its just my 2 cents. :tumbleweed:
 
As a university Professor in the US (but I'm British and got my eduction in the UK), I totally agree with this kid. It's all about passion and engagement. That said, most teachers (high school-university) that I know are very passionate about what they do and how they do it. The millennial kids have different expectations and learning styles than I certainly did (I'm in my forties) but we (teachers) have to learn to adapt to that and advance. Most of the time the experience is awesome, but sometimes it's a struggle as some kids don't want to be there and only have an interest in getting a degree and not learning or becoming engorged in the field they are studying. If you don't like the job get another one (that probable pays better). I love my job and that's because I love working with young intelligent passionate people.

From the video that teacher looks / sounds disinterested, but we don't have all the information.

No....I need to get back to grading mid-terms!

Its getting like this in a lot of professions, people dont actually want to do the job they are doing, they do the job for the money or the pension.
Cops are the same, most cops are just after a secure job that pays well and gives them a good pension. They are not in it to "make a difference"
