Is this engine noise normal? (Video)

Hi Guys,

My mate has an M3 and when he slowly revs his engine from idle, it starts to make a noise from approx. 1800rpm. The noise is much like in this video when held at those revs.

Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated

can't really see but I'm assuming your's is a desel Z4 in which case ............. it sounds ok

100% does not sound like my s54 engine.I have no idea what it is thats wrong,but shouldnt sound like that :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown:

I would have said it's not normal unless it's a TDi .

I don't know enough about the ///M valve gear but it sounds top end in which case I would get it looked at pronto before driving it, valves not lifting properly can = catastophic repair cost on any engine.

However a post on brother Bimmerfest suggest it might be normal ///M VANOS acoustics. Either way it offends my mechanical ear and I find it hard to believe the the most majestic straight six made should sound like that :? http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=510054
