Is this a good deal ?

To start with I have to admit being a old git who doesn't understand today's technological advances in phones etc - Myself and her who must be obeyed both have laptops and many evenings are wiled away with hours of silence while we both peruse the web - me on this forum and her surfing the net for the latest in shoes/boots/tops etc. whilst periodically texting family and friends. We have the same mobiles which are pretty embarrassing but are adequate for texting and calls . Thought we might try to get more up to date and saw this advert - we have visions of taking both to Greece this year ( she can have the phone and we can share the tablet so we can keep in touch with our emails etc and take a few photos etc} . Last year we noticed most of the tavernas had wifi and were only to pleased to give out their password.

Is this feasible and a good deal - what about download usage ?

Any help and advice much appreciated.

Whatever you choose, remember that mobile data (i.e. outside of your UK allowance) is VERY expensive.

If you can't get local/free/cheap wifi then either buy a PAYG data SIM abroad and use that. Otherwise you'll have to investigate what 'roaming' data bundles/charges are in place.

Samsung Galaxy S3 on o2 for £22 I assume?

I'm 100% iPhone all the way myself but everyone at work (I work in an IT department) is rocking the S3 and loves it!

In terms of going abroad o2 offer data roaming bolt-ons you can purchase in advance to prevent extreme charges while using the phone abroad.

500Mb data is more than sufficient for email/browsing!

The link you've posted is for the S3 mini, be careful the mini and the s3 are completely different spec'd devices. I have an S3 and its good. As above check out data.

Not a bad deal ... Paid in for a similar deal for my dads Christmas pressie this year and he got the free tab also ... He is never off it using WiFi.

The s3 is a good phone, and a good deal probably as the s4 will be out later this year :)

Thanks for all the info - we would only lock on to any local free wifi when abroad as we've heard all the horror stories of how much people have been charged - other than than sending emails and a few short calls the rest would be texts as we would normally do when on holiday abroad.

On a lot of pay monthly contracts you can now pay a fixed fee per day and get capped data (when you reach the cap on O2 you either stop using it / can't use it to pay another daily fee of £1.50) ; or on my Voda contract I paid £3 a day (billed each day the first time you use your phone) and was able to take my UK minutes, texts and data plan with me, so no additional cost. They only apply in the EU though, not sure about anywhere else. Very useful given how much I used my phone for finding places in and getting around Rome. Remember with 'free' wi-fi you often need to register (PITA) or get a password from the hotel you are staying in. Sometimes in our hotel it was faster to use cellular dat a than wi-fi - I guess because there were so many people logged on sharing the same Internet connection.

Also worth saying that I believe it is now a legal requirement for operators to cap roaming data usage in the EU - and to warn you when you near / reach that cap. You then have to take positive action to exceed it. However... that cap (which I think is 50Mb) can still cost you a bundle if you have not selected an option such as the one above.

Hope that helps - and if my memory is inaccurate I am sure someone will correct me :P

The Vodafone deal Bing has is great. If you're locked into a contract and can't move the easiest thing to do to keep the costs down is disable mobile data when roaming. Wifi will still work, so if bars etc are giving out their wifi passwords you'll be able to get online for free.

thinking through this I reckon all I need is a "tablet " opposed to an all singing and dancing phone with all the bits I'll hardly use - as I said all I want is a portable device that I can take on holiday so I can read emails , surf the internet , take photos and listen to music ( not into games ) Bloody confusing with all this android , ice cream sandwich etc !!!!!!!!!!!!! What should I get that will cover my needs ?
Balckberry . Samsung may be ?

I have a Google Nexus 7 and am very pleased with it. The screen is 7 inch so the device is quite small but it sits nicely on the table at meal times (I live on my own) and it's great for journeys on the bus or train, either using the free wifi or tethered to my Galaxy S2 phone. There is also a 3g model, but I don;t need that. The tablet is very good.
