Is there anyone in Kent with a backbox delete?

Hi all, as the title states I was wondering if there was anyone in Kent with a backbox delete that I could have a listen to :D

Thinking of getting it done based on the youtube videos I have watched, but want to hear it in person before I commit.

I hope you like drone :(

I’m based in Crowborough, E Sussex so could potentially meet somewhere

Do you have an SI? As the exhaust systems are different the end result will also be different.

In that case you have the M54 engine and a different exhaust system.

Your car is supposedly more droney with no box, although I haven’t heard the m54 with no box to compare.

You’re more than welcome to join me for a spin to get a rough idea if that helps, although if someone else is local with an m54 back box delete I’d have a listen to theirs.

Just let me know :)

Awesome, yeah I'll give you message if theres no one local or has the m54.

More droney makes me worried lol.

Cheers.

I'm based around the Bexleyheath area. Yes the m54 will drone without a backbox but the drone isn't always there. It can be driven in such a way to minimise/stop it completely. I personally wouldn't do it if you had to do a lot of long motorway journeys but as a weekend/summer toy then it would be insane not to.

The majority of my journey to works is dual carriage way and then the M20. Starting to think it might not be such a good idea

A couple weeks ago I meet up with a Youtuber known as It's Joel, as he was filming with my E85 M. He's got a 3.0 with the back box delete and it's pretty loud (louder than my M's standard back boxes). It also crackles and pops pretty much the second the engine has warmed up. It does sound pretty fruity, but depending on what your neighbours and local police are like, you could get pulled over for having an excessively loud system.

Joel's N54 sounded pretty close to my M when he was higher in his rev band, as the delete lets the engine scream very much like the S54 does when you take it up past 5k RPM. On idle after startup, there is more bass to the note, but it's not until he was going over 1500 RPM you really notice there is something different with the exhaust. I would expect on a long journey it would really wear you out, as it drones a fair bit and it's so loud that you really can't listen to your music, as it just cut through too much.

If you go onto Joel's YouTube channel (It's Joel) he's done a number of videos about his backbox delete, where you get some idea of it's tone, but what shocked me the most was just how loud it is in real life. Even though his videos hint at the increased volume, it's just a fraction of how loud the thing is.

Personally, I would go with an aftermarket back box that is more lightly baffled and free flowing. If you was going to do it, I would want to have exhaust valves installed, so it can be quiet on cold starts at home and be more tolerable when you need to go on the motorway for anything longer than 20 mins.

I had 2.5 dlv back box fitted to my 55 plated 3.0se, it sounds wonderful an I am very pleased with the sound. Despite being told it would fit easily, it did not, brackets were different and had to be cut off and rewelded to fit. I have no drone. Just a spine tingling burble that makes you think if you just listen hard enough you can discern each of the six pots. I had feared that I would have to race through the drone, But no, the burble is from tickover to about 2500 where it starts to snarl. I'm happy. :driving:

His videos were some of the ones that got me thinking about doing it, but everything is quieter through speakers so wanted it get a real life feel for it. I think aftermarket box is going to be the way forward based on yours and other comments. Any recommendations?

Did look into the dlv back box but have read (on here) that people have had issues with the guy who makes them recently.

May just save up the pennies a bit longer and get an eisenmann exhaust in a few months time :D

I would actually look for an exhaust specialist near you who can make a bespoke system/back box that can be fine tuned to your own tastes. Also, by going to one of these places, if there is anything you're not happy with or want to change, you can go back and have the rework the system they built for you.

Also, with these types of places, you will have a wider range of materials that the system can be built from, different gauges of mild or stainless steel etc. You will find that the value for money you get with these business is way better than going with a generic aftermarket brand.

With my own M, I know I am going to have to replace both back boxes by the end of this year. I've been looking at the classic BMW aftermarket tuning houses such as Alpina/Hartge/AC Schnitzer. With my local car club, one of the members actually has started up his own exhaust fabrication shop and has told me he would like to build me a system if I wanted to commission him to do it.

Ive seen the its joel videos and... im going to go for it. Mine is a strict weekend/ track car, so some extra drone doesnt concern me, but pops and crackles would be awesome!

A local garage charged me just 40 notes for a backbox delete on a 328i, so a lot cheaper than a proper system. Plus weight saving is useful for a track car!

i saw this ..

Mr Warriors DLV box came off my 2.5si.

I bloody hated it at motorway speeds. It droned like hell!! I have a standard box and really don't miss the extra noise.

I'm very glad he's happy with it and it sounds like it suits the pre facelift 3.0 better than my si.

Yes it's strange that.. I'm loving it, it's changed my driving style now, I love the burble .
Stopstart traffic now is a thing of joy. :D . From 1000 - 2500rpm it burbles and gurgles nicely.. Or is that me... Tug was in it today, said it sounded nice, and he is anti noise.
It's fair to add I don't like taking it on motorways though, and I cirtainly don't have to drive to work on a motorway. Having retired it's a glorified shopping trolley and I have never enjoyed going to the shops as much as I do now
And Erm.. Full on hooning of course :D
