Is the Z4 soft top the quickest?

If I remember rightly, it was on the Top Gear episode with the Z4, Honda S2000 and Boxster.

The Honda has the fastest complete 'down' cycle including windows by a fraction of a second.
The Z has the faster 'roof down' where the windows are already down.

wasnt BMW's marketing line something like........."the worlds fastest softtop".......... I seem to remember something along those lines?. Im taking about magazine ads rather than tv by the way.

I was asking for faster roof closing times, not ones that are blatently slower e.g. S2000.
The window operation is irrelevent, when you're at the traffic lights and you fancy a bit of open top action nobody is going to notice your windows.
Lastly coupe owners are jealous of our ability, that's why they put their 10 penneth worth in threads that don't concern them.

Tell me, because I'm confused: how do you manage to drop your roof without first dropping the windows?

Of course it's relevant! You can't get the roof down without the windows having to be lowered first, so of course you've got to build that time into the timing. In all honesty I couldn't care less if it's faster than a S2000, etc. I've really got more important things to worry about, such as deciding what to have for lunch...

:rofl: I guess the only non window time relevance is that windows can go up and down at speed - if I want to drop the roof at some lights I drop the windows while slowing down then as soon as stopped I hit the roof button. Saves a bit of time!
 
What an amusing thread. I was thinking of timing my roof, but wasn't sure how to do it.

With the windows down do I add in the 2 seconds it takes to unlatch the front or not and does the clock stop when it hits the deck, or when the motor shuts off and light flashing to indicate it's stowed?

All very confusing and I want the best time possible, which I think with a bit more practice, windows down roof unlatchedand stopping on the deck I can get a pb around 3.5 :rofl: :rofl:
 
:rofl: I love this thread...fuel is about $5 a gallon here, $8 a gallon in the UK, Libya and the rest of the desert is in a state of civil war, the USA is about to go under from debt (in 35 years) and the Mississippi is 14 feet above flood level....and we are worried about how fast the top comes down. Let's keep things in perspective here and deal with the important things in life...cars.

Mine is a bit slower due to the extra motions of the clamshell...but I don't mind.... :rofl: :rofl:

Yes (new world record). But how far away can you open your roof, by pointing the key at your head? I was in my local today and was surprised at the distance I lowered my roof from. I didn't measure it must have been at least 35 yards away, do you think the key battery condition makes a difference or are they all charged by the car at the same rate?

+1. My old Z3 was hyper fast. Had the routine down to around 3 seconds including folding the hand release arms back flush again :thumbsup:
 
My remote works well at the 50m mark and was tested late at night at near 100m
Trouble is had to put my beer down to check it was locked up properly :)

Biggest factors are line of sight and interference.
