Is the wind Deflector worth it?

I suppose its down to how long your hair is or if your wife/gf/so looks like Cousin IT when the engine stops and the doors open.

A trip in my friends roadster down the motorway without the wind deflector and windows down confirmed to me that it's a necessity to have one after emerging from the car looking like I had been dragged through a hedge backwards!
 
Hmm I seem to have reignited a passionate debate here! All I wanted to know is whether the deflector would still be effective enough without the roll hoop inserts :?

Then I'd say the answer is 'no' else BMW would not supply them as part of the kit
 
If i have to listen to my GF whining about her hair in her face while I'm driving it's worth it to get one . It works great in the Z4.... can't hear her at all ....get the speed up over 200 and you can't hear the screaming either...it's wonderful... :D
 
Got to admit I use mine all the time, but the main reason for this is that I've been spoiled by my old MG TF.

You may all laugh, but trust me, the TF was a much better car from the windflow perspective than the Z4, even without heated seats I was nearly always warm and comfortable whatever the weather just due to the cabin heater. The same cannot be said of the Z4 even with windows up and deflector in place. :fuelfire:

Overall, I'd not be without mine, but then I just wear t-shirts to drive in (rarely like to wear a jacket at the wheel) and Northern lad or not, hood and windows down in 5 - 6 degree weather whilst wearing a t-shirt just isn't comfortable. Plus I get looked at as though I'm nuts when I have the roof down at night in the cold as it is! :rofl:
 
I've considered (and still do) switching to the mesh OEM deflector. I have the plexiglass roadster solutions one now which still allows some air in to make you a bit chilly'er if it's cold out.

I just can't get it comfortable at all, my right shoulder and leg are hot from the heater while my left leg and shoulder are cold from the turbulent air spilling into the car.

Snap, i came from a eunos roadster and yes the cabin was a lot less windy then the Z4 - It didnt have heated seats but as a consolation had speakers in the headrest :thumbsup:

There's a lot of debate here about the effectiveness of windscreens. I know I already posted here, but maybe I should go into a more comprehensive analysis for all of you.

1. Windscreens are worth it, but only if you get the right kind. Otherwise, you are going to end up spending money on something that doesn't do a thing.
2. If you've tried the between rollbars windscreen, you are going to be disappointed--I was, too. The only good kind are those that go across the entire back of the roll bars, and inserts I found usually don't go left and right enough to keep wind from coming in from the sides.
3. Mesh in general is a bad idea on these cars. Lexan or glass it MUCH better.

That said, I think I mentioned before I ended up going with windblox, but only after trying two other companies.... :x The one I have covers the sides of the car much better, and I would say is twice as good as the crumby in between seats one. Anyway, there you have it. Yes, windscreens are worth it, but if you are buying something small or made from mesh, it's probably not going to do you any good.
 
Good it's not just us then ... I had mk 2.5 mx-5 and found it suffered less wind buffeting than the zed perhaps it's the larger cabin.

It is worth it and the BMW leather one is only and 150 quid- yes it's harder to remove but to honest I don't bother anymore!
 
There is one for sale for 70 quid in the buy and sell! Give it a go and if u don't like it sell it again!
