Out E89 looks amazing, the DCT is just mind blowing.

Adaptive suspension gives us two cars in one.

But and its a big but...

IT weighs too much 1.6 tons is too much im afraid ,else its the best overall car iv owned IF it weighed 1000 kg

Hello ..

Hi Brasseye .. well more weight means we need more power the little s .. means loads more power and torque to propel us to 0-60 in 4.8 secs :D

I don't think he or anyone is that bothered about how quickly it gets to 60, it's about how it flows down the road and goes around corners. Weight is the enemy for anyone thinking of going for a sporty drive, hence I can understand the appeal of a ragtop for a car that is used to that end.

So the Elise is the answer then? Lightweight, toy-free and, apparently fantastic fun (I've never driven one).

Yep it is, If only I could have fit in one, I'd have bought one years ago. Prefer the easy soft life now I'm past 50 though, so the Z4MR is about right. if a few 100kg over weight :D

I for one would never have a rag top - So if BMW go back to ragtop for the z4 they wont be getting my business.

I couldn't give a shite about the little bit of extra weight in my hardtop roof - It looks soooo much better than the ragtop :).

I have no complaints in how my car goes down the road and round the corners :driving:

This ole chestnut again. You have the E85 bunch who were more into the true sports car feel versus the "new recruits" when the E89 came along who liked it's hard top and boulevard cruiser nature. Two very different cars with (mainly) different followers, although there are a few who've had both.

On pure sales figures alone, it looks like BMW made a big strategic balls-up with the E89. It's not quite as simple as that (the economic crisis didn't help) but they can't have much confidence in the roadster market because by now they should be shaking down the E89's replacement. I first drove an E89 at one of BMW's official launch days at Bedford Autodrome back in May 2009 so the current model has been out for over 6 years with no new model on the horizon for at least another 2-3 years. That's a mammoth lifecycle in the car industry these days, especially for the Germans.

The roadster market is small for any manufacturer that produces them..

The E85 had a 6 year run, hardly any sold at the end, sure the E89 is no different.

This. I was looking for a smaller GT Sports coupe. I'd settled on the BRZ & planned the mods but then realised the E89 was a hard top. If it was a soft top I'd be driving a heavily modded BRZ right now.

Nobody is wrong here it's like everything in life it's down to personal choice and individual needs or wants. I will never ever slate the E85, they are great roadsters even with the odd flaws, I really enjoyed the 2 I had but for me the E89 nicks it, but that is flawed as well.

Exactly, we would probably have an E85 now (even although I dont like soft tops) if the hard top didnt exist.

Lets all love what we own, we wouldn't have them if we didn't want the model or make that we now own. E85...E89, their both BMW Z4's at the end of the day

Ripped off from elsewhere but it holds true... The Best Z4 in the world is the one parked on your driveway , we saw a lovely 2.5 today with Belgium Plates ...visiting Modena like us today , next week there off to Spain 8)

So for me the Roadster is not dead never will be.
