Is the Harman/Kardon Worth it in m40i ?

Is it straightforward to 'swap in' the speakers with a better option (i.e. are the speakers proprietary or do they use a standard size that could literally be swapped in/out easily?)

Not much documentation yet but if they follow all other BMW’s then it will be a proprietary design

Audison, Hertz and Eton all make speakers that can be direct replacements in BMW, I don't see why the new car would be any different

So far Audison and Eton have not released any yet for the G29....

That's a shame, are they non proprietary sizes then? or have they just not updated their configurators, as I cant imagine BMW would start using non standard size speakers, but then again nothing would surprise me with car manufacturers

All the speakers on the E89 are non standard in the sense that they use offset/asymmetrical mounting points / form factors....they also use proprietary connectors...apart from that they are standard..

Can’t see BMW ruining the habits of a lifetime...

Wait til you try a Mercedes stock audio system - truly abysmal! Worst part about my C300, but I couldn't get the upgraded speakers without the Premium Plus pack which meant having to have a sunroof which meant I had no headroom....argh!

Thankfully I didn’t have to suffer that in my C300 having heard the standard ones! Burmeister and sunroof are a winning combo. The sound in the Merc is great! At least to drown out the four pot engine :D

Despite changing all the settings and the equaliser in the car, it hasn’t made any difference.
However, having stuffed the ski hatch with an old puffer jacket, this has stopped the vibration and annoying noise when the volume is above speaking level.

Ive also changed the equaliser settings in Spotify and this has helped a lot with the overall sound. It’s still not amazing but a marked improvement.

Not sure it's been mentioned but after the latest software upgrade the H&K appears to sound much better in my G29.

An annoying issue where the volume would sometimes be lower on startup has been fixed.

I find the HK sound disappointing - constant bass booming , no bass clarity.
Still making adjustments to the sound after 5 weeks of ownership.
Also stuffed the ski hatch - but maybe not enough - so will squeeze some more in :)

The more speakers and amps etc the better, if you can afford it then go for it. Its gonna be an improvement right?

Why can’t BMW do what Audi did in their TT and put a 675 watt sound system in. I love my music loud and in a roadster it’s even more important in my view.

So how does the software upgrade work? I keep checking the app and it says no upgrade available... Havent used the car in weeks so speakers still aren’t loosening up.

I checked every couple of weeks or so as I was expecting an upgrade sooner rather than later as it's a new model and there were a few issues.

My BMW Connected app on my mobile informed me that there was an upgrade (probably about 6-7 weeks ago now) so I tootled off to my car where it appears the download took place on my mobile and was transferred to the car. The whole process took around 30 minutes.

The big difference to the HK was the upgrade fixed an issue where, on occasion, the radio volume was very quiet on startup. Sometimes it was at normal volume whereas on some occasions (probably every 1 in 5) it needed to be turned up. I feel that the sound quality has improved but I've no way of proving this unless BMW inform us that they did introduce a fix\improvement in the latest firmware update.

What version are you on... been on 112019 since I purchased the car.. on the G29 forum there is mention of a 032020 release.

Mine is showing 032019.48 at the moment. I got it to search yesterday but by the time I go back to the car the ignition has already turned off. I need to do a search when I’m out driving, which wont be anytime soon.

I took mine to BMW dealer just before we went into Covid19 lockdown as I'd lost Spotify on the system. They updated mine to 03/2020.30
I got Spotify back and also the option for automatic heated steering wheel and passenger seat in cold weather. Previously this only worked on drivers seat.
I also think the HK system sounds better but can't tell you what they've done. That might be my imagination but I instantly thought it sounded better without me tweaking the equaliser as before.

I used to have some vibrations with the music also, turned out it was the passenger seatbelt vibrating against the side of the car.
Changing the passenger seat position a little fixed it for me. I'm loving th HK speakers compared to the hi-fi upgrade in my 4 Gran Coupe.

Thanks raven. I’ll check these tomorrow. Make sure they’re not affecting things. It’s been better recently and then today it was vibrating again.
