Is my MTB frame Knackered?

Riding some bomb holes at the weekend I came a cropped and hit a tree stump head on. All appeared OK much to my surprise and I don't think I hi it that hard but....

I think my frame has taken the brunt of the impact. I would have thought the wheel or forks would have suffered first. It's 7005 tubing and doesnt appear to have any cracks. The tube is bent slightly but it may have been like this before.

Question is do I need a new frame, can I trust it?
 
Looks buggered to me.
Get a decent bike shop to check it before you get on it again. That looks like the top tube, what does the down tube look like?
If the forks are carbon they defo need to go. Seen these fail after crashes and the face plant at 40mph isn't pretty....

Looks like an aluminium frame, the elasticity of aluminium is crap so that sort of damage to the paint work, don't use it again, whatever anyone says..
 
Yep Ali 7005. I think the down tube is bent a bit also at the headset, again hard to know for sure as I have never checked before but assumes to be straight.
 
Just don't kill yourself before you have had your use of helping me with the skirts :D

Seriously, that has weakened the frame to a point where it is not safe to use. One pot hole and you will be in the middle of the road somewhere ...

You should have seen the pothole I hit, about 30ft across and 20ft deep with a bloody tree stump in it. :lol:
 
In my youth I had this problem with an old bmx of mine (except i hopped off a ramp :oops: )

Noticed the paintwork looks a bit funny, and thought nothing of it.

Some time later later did the said jump again (kids never learn! :roll: ) and the frame sheared in two, slicing the artery in my wrist :(

A few hours wasted, 5 or so stitches and getting an earful from my mother; well didnt do that again!

So as other have said.... scrap it! ending in the middle of the road is one thing.. having sheared metal/ other vehicles harm you just isnt worth it.

Yup... i think its time to join the carbon-crew!

Metal fatigue is a wonderful thing, might not have an issue for years after this crash.. then on day.... the frame snaps in two!

Looking at the state of the headset and cables I reckon the bike might be past it's sell by date in any event. :wink:

That's just a bit of mud. Only just fitted some Shimano hydraulic brakes to it. Only just started using it before Xmas so nearly new.

That sounds like the one I smashed my shoulder in when off-roading in 1991 (clavicle in 12 pieces, scapula in 2 places and dislocated to boot). No screws or plates, just a great big lump and a dropped shoulder. Couldn't lie down for around 10 months. That's why I gave up MTBs and joined a road club. Occasional road rash has been kid's play compared to that.... :)

Definitely ditch the frame, it might have saved you this weekend but it will bite you at some point. :!:
 
Is your frame still not under warranty? I was under the impression Mountain Bikes come with a rather long warranty on the frame.

:D I don't think they wouldn't honour a warranty in those circumstances.

hasn't carbon got a very finite life too? nice steel frame i reckon, upgraded to a cotic soul a year ago, it's honestly the most enjoyable bike i've owned.
 
Agree with above re: bent ali frames. Dont risk it and instead get yourself a UK stocked On-One carbon 456 frame for the ludicrous price of just £299?!

I'm liking that, need a front fork as well so reckon I'm looking at at least £500 transfering other components.

Any other frames/suppliers to recommend.
