Managed to get myself a garage so i can securely park my car overnight (have always been worried about vandalism etc overnight ever since my old Z got keyed a couple of years ago). Anyway rang my insurer to see what discount i would get for the car being parked in a secure garage to be told they would charge me an aditional £60 to park in a secure garage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF are they crazy? their reasoning for this is small claims for low speed accidents is more likely. When asked why there is no discount for my car being more secure over night they just say it is just down to poscode. This is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard how can my car be more at risk of a claim for low speed accident vs much less chance of theft and vandalism or someone going into my car on the street? Insurance companies are always trying to find ways to get more money out of you, bastards!

problem is insurance companies are businesses
They have one and one responsibility only ..........to make a profit for the Share holders .....they are not your friend :o

"Buyer beware" was never more relevant ( oh the Banks are the same  )

Think this was on Pistonheads recently, unless it was here. Apparently there's lots of insurance claims for damage caused by driving into and out of garages and driveways. ???

I had the same from my insurance company. When I looked into taking a garage, the insurance company told me there would be neither additional charge nor reduction. By the time I started using the garage, they decided they wanted to charge me an additional premium. After a bit of a rant from me they waived this. As you say, they seem to regard my ability to park successfully more of a risk than that of parking on a London street.

The reason for paying more insurance premium if the car is in the garage is that thieves can break into your garage, close the garage door and then take as long as needed to get into the car without being seen. This is what people said.

There is some truth in that I suppose, but it's still bollocks IMO. Surely the OVERALL risk is still less if it's parked in a garage than outside in the street? Makes sense to me, although obviously common sense doesn't apply with all insurance companies...

My insurance was the same, i'm with Elephant. There was a £100 difference between parking on the road and parking in a garage. It was £50 more to park on the driveway.

my old 7 series was never stolen or broken into, but I did have an accident in it, on my driveway, by hitting the carport

every day, several times a day, there's a chance of making a mistake getting into or out of a garage/carport/parking place

I can image that thousands of tiny chances add up to more than the occasional chance of theft/break-in

I posted on that thread. I was doing some quotes for a potential switch to an M3. The exact same quote only 2 clicks apart.

On the drive: £1399
In the garage: £1543

Sure that is a fair point that some people will scrape their cars getting in and out so need to make a claim. But there is no way that is going to outweigh the claims for theft and vanldalism at all, nevermind by that much!

Daylight robbery.

But insurance companies never ask you whether you have a single or double garage. If there is higher risk of scratching the car when you drive in/out in a single garage, then the risk will be lower for double garage (then lower insurance premium).

I recall a member on here 2 years ago who had an a MR and again more expensive to insure if garaged, the reason he was given was increased fire risk. :?

I'm with elephant the difference between street, driveway and garaged was minimal - I always phone and haggle anyway :)

Mason storm - that's ridiculous, that it can cost more to park your car in a garage. I would have thought the opposite.
The likelihood of vandalism (anytime of day and night) and breaking into a car (overnight) on a roadside is higher than being secure in a garage overnight, in my opinion.
