Is it worth updating the Sat Nav maps.

My X5 does it automatically as I am subscribed, is it different for the E89?
Might be the same if one subscribes but the subscriptions don’t look value for money for a weekend / leisure / toy.

I have no idea what the costs are as mine is still in the "free" first 3 years. I did buy the "permanent" Apple car play deal from BMW as it was a deal from them instead of the monthly fee, so perhaps I will wait whenever I need it, to get another black friday deal on that as they always have subscription deals then.

Yeah.......and I’m STILL picking up bits of sugar beet that fell out of his wellies onto my driveway..... :x

Hold yew hard bor! Thass no good yew a-puttin on yar parts, 'n talkin' a load of squit, or that little ol' bor may come back over and hoolly thack yew aside the lug.

And I always thought we sounded funny 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿😂

Slow you down bor.. i intend to use the BMW updates every other year... and you get two a year...so 'male logic' says only £12 an update

If all you do is potter about locally and there are no road changes then maybe not.

I drive down to Cambridge [from Nottingham] a lot (massive changes to the A14), A453 in Nottingham and South West Manchester. All loads of new roads so it was definitely worth while upgrading the maps.

Has anyone had to resort to actually reading the road ahead, and maybe the road signs.
Bit too 'old skool' I guess.

Don't have one old bean. Got the Z as a fun car. No sat nav, no parking sensors, no nanny state. And I can still read a map. :D

Is that North up or track up:?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I can't get the maps updated. Tried the official BMW Connected website and was willing to pay £49 for the 2020-2 update as mine haven't been done since the car was born in 2013. Couldn't get the thing to download as it kept saying I'd filled the boxes in wrongly....err, I do know where I live and my own name

Tried a 3rd party company on the web. £29 for the same maps, 19gb download took hours and I had to buy a 32gb stick to get it all on.
Tried putting the usb in the glovebox slot and nothing was recognised. Looked in the manual and it says you need to insert a CD to update the maps, and yet the BMW Connected site said that mine is supposed to be able to receive updates via the USB?

I was rather naively hoping BMW would send me a USB pre-loaded for my £49 which I would have been happy with, instead of me trying to understand the, to me, rather convoluted way of doing things.

Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

Not really. Does your usb in the glovebox actually work? Do you have a USB stick that has flashing light to check if the usb port is working? What format is on the usb stick?

Pretty sure the USB port works as I'm sure that's the one I used to download music from my phone to the hard drive. The USB stick was brand new. No idea what /how the format is. I am quite thick when it is computer stuff

I think it needs to be fat 32. If you have a PC right click on the usb stick and you will see 'format' in the options presented.

Updated my maps at the weekend. Doing via official BMW process works but your USB stick does need to be formatted FAT32. Having downloaded the initial zip file the BMW file manager then unpacks the contents to the stick - no manual file transfer involved. Download time plus the time taken to unpack to the USB and finally time updating via the socket in the glovebox will add up to several hours in all.

As above must be fat32 and then have the folders on the usb at correct level so that everything under the “root” folder is at the top level. If yo7 have a folder called root on your usb that is where you are going wrong.

I'm sure it's only women who keep turning the map round to face the way they're going? :poke: :D

All the ex RAF guys I flew with always had the map track up..even when they started to get GPS in the cockpit they would put it track up..when I got into the cockpit after they had been in I had to keep adjusting the FMS to north up.. :headbang:

Ah well, I didn't spend much time with avionics etc in the cockpit. Too busy pushing the two big levers on the left all the way forward and watching the red glow in the mirror, with the occasional glance at the TBTs, ..................... assuming I'd bolted everything back together properly :)
