Is it safe changing two tires at a time?

Hi,
Need a suggestion from you guys. I was planning to change my tires since they are more than 6 years old (2011 manufactured). They have enough threads left on them buy I read that it's not safe to ride on tires more than 6 years old. Besides the BMW manual discourages use of tires more than 6 years old.

I was planning for the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ (225/50ZR16 5-Rib Tread Design). Haven't fully finalized but I'm looking for a all season tire (M+S) with fairly good snow handling and this seems to do the job. If you guys have other suggestions, do let me know.

Now, my question: E85 don't have all wheel drives and would like to know if I can change the tires in pairs? Is it okay if I change the two set of tires for the rear first and then may be after a month or so, later change the front set of tires. What are your suggestions? Would that be a dumb thing to do? Let me know please.

Pairs is good, no need for all 4 but singles is a big NO

If you are fitting winter or all weather you definitely shouldn't mix tyres..........the compound reacts differently and will make the vehicle handle like a pig :thumbsdown:

I already have a set of all season tires on my car right now and plan to replace two of those with another set of all season M+S tires. Would that be a problem?

The date on the tyre only tells you when the tyre was made. It could stay on the shelf for a further five years before being fitted and be sold as a new tyre. So unless you know when the tyres were fitted the manafacturing date is not a true sign of "age"

No that shouldn't be an issue for you..........it's mixing summer & winter product which is the problem due to manufacturing differences.

The DOT is the only basis for age that we have to use.......it's true that storage of tyres is an issue but most organisations don't have the ability to store correctly anyway.

NTDA recommendations are stringent checks for signs of age at five years and replacement at ten years irrespective of tread depth or condition............these timescales are all based from the DOT code.

On my zeds and my M3 I changed fronts approx every two years and rears every year, that’s just the way they wore. Torque is the tire shops best friend. :thumbsdown:

The fast and furious guy got killed because he was on 16 year old tires trying to race around as if he was on new ones. Now 16 isn’t the same as 6, but they are getting on in age. A lot depends on how and where they have been kept. In a garage, in the sun, out in the winter .... it all makes a difference.

Funny thing is that I had a set of blizzaks on the back of my M3, Michelin ps’s on the front, and it was surprisingly decent to drive. Now I didn’t go racing but for normal hooning around they worked ok. It just happened that way and I don’t recommend it and wouldn’t do it again.....
