Is it possible to make a Z4 sound like this?

Dug out the EVO CotY video from 2001 and the sound of the TVR Tamora is epic:

It's a straight 6 with similar bhp to a Z4 ///M so surely it should be possible to get the Z4 to sound like this?

Is rpi as close as we can get? They sound fab but drone stops me buying one, but does a tvr drone too??

Maybe custom full exhaust v similar to tvr one? How hard would it be to bastardise one to fit an ///m

I like the metallic sound but I don't like the drone of some aftermarket exhausts.

I test drove the speed six engine in a Cerbera before I settled on buying the V8 4.5 model, the six was surprising smooth & free revving better than the V8 in many ways & it felt very potent too.

I just end up feeling pretty let down by a cars noise now after my TVR I thought the S54 just sounded flat in comparision & I feel the same about the S65 V8 too in my M3...why can't more cars sound like a TVR they even sound epic just on tickover.

I suppose even though bmws sound flat & pretty uninspiring they work & are reliable so that's a big benefit! You can't have it both ways...

I had a 4.2 Cerbera -- power delivery was a bit odd, flames out of the exhaust were great, but rpm limit was a bit low (7000 when the change-up light came on, apparently if you hit 7300 there were some weird harmonics that could destroy the engine). Never drove a TVR straight six, but was always put off by the advert that said "TVR [something-with-a-straight-six-may-have-been-a-Tuscan] for sale: 25,000 miles (24,000 on new engine)"

Most of the exhaust is just a stainless tube. I suspect the TVR sound is to do with some resonator boxes somewhere, and maybe some wild cam timing.

Seems unlikely. I've had my Z4 since new (2007) so most of my TVR contacts have gone bust (Silverstone Performance) or moved on (Joospeed).

Minimal silencing/straight through and a large collective rear box from what I could see of my friends T350C - sounded fruity!

I'm advised that TVRs are often type approved with a quiet normal exhaust which gets switched for a noisy one at point of sale

The 4.5 did rev to 7500rpm but it never felt happy hanging on that high, I was always led to believe the 4.2 was a little smoother lower down the revs than the 4.5 but the 4.5 came on song a little more at 5k revs plus but autocar still tested the 4.2 as the quicker car of the two.

I was unlucky with my AJP as that needed rebuilding at only 19k miles they are so fragile it drives you mad! But for noise I seriously miss it, it was loud even on tickover & low revs & sounded angry at high revs my M3 sounds apologetic in comparision it's laughable!!

I love how you can bounce off a Z4M/M3's limiter all day & it will still work after a good thrashing you could never drive a TVR like that it just proves the value of engineering a quality engine works wonders. :driving:

I would love to know too Woots, my Cerbera only had a factory sports exhaust on it & still had the cats in but it still sounded epic, there are a few Z4M's/M3's that sound amazing in America from what I've seen in clips but I don't know what set up they use.

I would imagine if you ditched the cats put straight through pipes & a quality back box on I would have thought the S54/S65 would sound great then.

I really hope you get the results you are looking for Carl as I just feel its difficult to match the TVR sound, my old Z4M & current V8 M3 fail by a mile in the sound department...I hope you come up with the answer & if you do let me know

I agree too Woots the V8 M3 only has the induction noise going for it, it even has a hole in the bonnet to suck air in but it still sounds pants from the exhaust!
