Is it just me, or...

Ah but if I was buying it, then it'd be my car, not the forum's  :D

Bing - you never own the car, you are only keeping it on behalf of the forum ...

I bet it would still be cheaper after shipping to buy one over here! Off topic but friend of a friend imported into Au two old m3s. Sold one and the profit from it nearly paid the shipping and cost of the one he kept!
Absolutely it would, but the stupid government doesn't allow it. You can't register an imported car except for very specific circumstances, none of which the Z4M would fall under :(

That's interesting, I'd love to know how this guy got those two in then. I wonder if it has anything to do with nationality etc as a few of us were talking about this when another friend piped up about an in-law who recently came back to britain to buy a Bentley which he exported to Au. (I have a good handful of friends out there working!) Hmm

That's true about mine - there's so many bits on it bought from or donated by other forum members that it feels like the forum's car. However I can assure you that if I ever get in an M it will be aaaaaaalllll mine :D

Looked at this one again. Still not hating it even though I feel like I should be.

Brighter wheels would do it for me but I've just noticed the 292g/km Co2 - That's the £480 road tax /Robbery bracket :( One of my cars is in that band and couldn't justify another.

I've replied via PM so we don't keep cluttering this thread ;)

Unless Bing objects, please reply in the thread (or PM me) - I've looked into importing cars to Oz and for personal use there don't seem to be any problems (as long as the car meets the requirements for the rego). The biggest limitations are the taxes which are charged at the Australian value of the car (perhaps twice the UK value for an ///M)

I think that you need to own the car for over one year before you can import. Otherwise it is held and impounded for a year or so. When I lived in oz I could not import my coupe for this reason.

I have very briefly looked at how much it would cost to import an ///M to Malaysia and the same appeared to be true - massive taxes. Never asked any questions though - knowing the Malaysian government they'd tax me on the original list price of the car

Probably the best way to start is speaking to car export/import specialists.

So are you planning on staying in Oz for longer Richard ?

Not at the moment - it was more curiosity when I came here and realised the price of second hand cars. A £15K ///M would fetch $50K (£25-30,000) and my tatty old E46 320d is worth three or four times its UK second hand value.
If I did move here I would seriously consider importing my ///M (or failing that all of the modifications and refit them to one here). I'm not sure that it would be road-legal here with a supercharger, so once I've got one, I suppose I'll be stuck in England for good :D

Importing is surprisingly easy. I chose not to stay anyway, but a friend did and imported easily. However, think ahead - better to purchase km dials in Europe and get them fitted rather than buy dials from BMW in Oz. - mega pricey.

I looked at an E89 while living there. 130,000 AUD. - about £80k then (USED!!). Bought a golf instead. Biggest mistake was not buying a Ford Falcon. I loved driving them! :)

This is correct. I had actually thought it was 2 years but just confirmed it's only 1.

You will pay about 15% market value as import tax and GST. Plus you have the shipping and insurance costs. Also, while a minor issue, apparently warranty (longer term warranty like chassis, rust protection, etc.) becomes void (the warranty is with BMW UK, so BMW Australia does not deal with it).

New business plan:
1. Move to UK
2. Buy a bunch of nice cars
3. Live there for a year
4. Bring cars back to Oz and sell
5. Profit?
