Is it hard to install coils and spark plugs yourself?

I'm planning on replacing all my coils and plugs in the near future to hopefully cure a slight hesitation and roughness i experience in low revs. I can get them at a pretty good price i think, 200 euro for 6 coils and 6 spark plugs, i gave the BMW parts numbers to a parts store here and he gave me the prices.

Is it something that you can DIY or does it need to go to a shop? I'm somewhat capable in working on my car, for example i swap my brake pads myself but is this something i could do with such little experience? Are there any special tools required?

I replaced coil packs on the Polo in 10 minutes using nothing more than a screwdriver but can not obviously state that the BMW one is as easy.

I just did a quick google.

ga41 What makes you think that the coils need changing? I've had several fail on various Merc's that I've owned but I reckon they're something that either works or doesn't. Plugs on the other hand definitely drop off towards the end of their life.

I'd change the plugs first if they are old and them look at the coils but I'd be interested to hear other opinions.

Please follow up to let us know if it makes a difference too!

My mechanic suggested it might be coils, he removed and reinstalled them and it did ease the problem slightly and so he recommended i replace them eventually.

Plus One...change the plugs and see if the problem goes away. I would go with NGK Irridium plugs. I use them in all my vehicles
