Is it acceptable to de-badge an M???

It's now an opportunity to race everything to see if the M badge on the back is backed up by a suitable power plant :-)

perfectly acceptable! really makes people scatch their their heads as to what it is (i've had people ask Porschers to Astons_ herrr no its a Beemer badge you thicko). I've only kept the side badges, but with inly 2 Exhausts (albeit large ones) and no badges, its quite funny hearing people talk and speculate as to what it is.

Provided you don't try to make your car look better than it is I don't see a problem. I mean don't go putting some 35is badges on in place of the ///M ones :poke: :D

Steve_R1979 your car, your choice. You'll always get a bunch of differing opinions on here, even some who state you have to keep it stock. Personally, I like the subtle de-badged approach - the darkened badges akin to a "black" version are also pretty cool. But, there again, I hate chrome (including badges) as I find them too bling.

It's only acceptable if you are removing them to put bigger M badges on! I think BMW should have a part ownership still of every BMW out there - if someone removes their badges they should be reported to BMW and the car confiscated.

No, I'm really not serious. Personally I don't care what owner do to their cars although I would advise to keep the badges to either put back on when they sell or to give to the next owner in case they wish to reinstate them. I would rather see M badges removed from an M car than M badges put on a non-M car but having said that, BMW themselves do exactly that but at least they do add some M parts to backup the Marketing ploy. Note that this is nothing new though - BMW even did it back in the E30 days on the 325i M if I recall. I remember once nearly buying a convertible one. Think the main difference between it and a non-M 325 i was the M-tec suspension.

Worth noting that some aficionados don't consider even the Z4 M proper M's anyway as they're considered to be made up from the E46 parts bin. I think over time they have been won over by the car now that they have other things to complain about (ie, turbo M's :) )

I don't subscribe to the elitist opinion that this and that isn't a "true or proper M".
In my own humble and far from professional opinion, call it ignorance, but if a car...any car was commissioned from the M division then irrespective of what came before or after said car, it's a true M.

My car was debadged when I bought it but got the dealer to supply the badges as part of the deal. I ran it debadged for 2 years, but then fitted just the side badges. I am contemplating now fitting the rear, but change my mind daily - this thread doesn't help the decision process.

I'd quite like to be able to remove the BMW badges (and the ///M badges), but that would leave some very odd looking areas of bodywork. Were the coupe completely debadged, I think most people wouldn't have a clue what it was.

And there in lies the beauty for me. I find the M badges incredibly tacky these days, I've seen them slapped on to everything, not necessarily even made by BMW. That wasn't my reason for doing it as such, I just find the shape cleaner with less badges, particularly on the rear of the coupe. Best place for it is on my avatars chest I've decided 8)
4 exhausts and the way it sits pretty much gives the game away in terms of performance in my eyes.

ETA: yes I see what you mean, no badges at all I don;t think people would even know it as a BMW. I did consider that as I also find the indicator BMW badges pretty gash, but then I looked at the alternatives  Awful.

2nd best use of them I've seen yet was on a Prius. That did make me laugh, in a good way.

M badges everywhere nowadays. Saw a single piped 4 series the other day with m badge and fake chrome m3 lookalike grills on the front wing, m badges on the brake calipers so M brand value totally ruined by twats in marketing.

There was story of an e39 m5 With 518i badges a few years back. Brilliant.

I would display the badge loud and proud -
you wouldn't take the silver flying lady off a Rolls Royce would you ??
:D

Not quite the same thing..

I would definitely not call an M badge iconic in the same way or unique anymore, especially as some people feel they can put them on cars that arnt even BMWs!

Sorry I disagree ! I think that the "M" badge is iconic - sticking "M" badges on a non "M" car is like having turbo decals down the side of an XR3 that is a standard Ford Escort - that's fine if that's what you want to do but please let's not lose the "M" value !!
