Is drivers seat supposed to be adjustable during driving?

So, I took my car in for an inspection II today, and one minor issue that I've been having with it is that I can't adjust the seats (sports heated memory seats) when driving the car.

They can be adjusted immediately on start up (very briefly), or as the chap who did the inspection discovered, indefinitely if the key is half turned in the ignition.

He wondered if it might just be a safety feature, but wasn't sure. If you have the same seats in your car, do they work in motion?

If not, any idea what might cause a fault like that? :|

Yep they are adjustable when driving, how else are you able to find adjust for the perfect position :)

The mystery continues then! Although good to know that they should one day work at my convenience rather than theirs.

If I or the nice chap over at ETA motorsport manage to get to the bottom of it, I'll do my best to share the learning!

I just thought I'd come back and update this.

Took the car to a BMW specialist garage near me. The tested a variety of issues to see what was causing the problem. In the end they were able to confirm it was the switch.

A replacement switch from BMW was about £160 and the part wasn't available second hand. That, alongside all the labour, which was partially for experimenting with different things to try to diagnose the problem (2.5 hours), then fitting, came to a total of £450. :(

I thought reading this post may help others who have the issue in the future bypass some of the testing time, potentially bringing the price down a bit for themselves.

Wow! :o For £450 to adjust your seats whilst on the move, I think I'd just pull over... Can honestly say I've never needed to adjust them whilst moving, or once set right, hardly adjust them at all really.

holy s**t balls! not available second hand too is a load of bollocks, theyre the same switch pack as an E46 seat, which are about a tenner on ebay, hate it when stealers have your pants down :(

Ha, yeah. If I had known that it was going to be £450, I'd have definitely stayed at home. At the point where the final costs were clear I would have been liable for a good chunk of it, job done or not basically, as they spent quite a lot of time investigating.

Bit annoying to hear about the switch pack though. They said they put a parts search out, and I guess the parts might have a different code/number even if they are cross compatible?

It was an indie BMW specialist though, so if they aren't aware, that's probably nearly as bad as if they're just pulling a fast one.
