Hello friends,

I'm just away to get my audio system installed in my new zed and I thought i had everything covered with the following :

HU - JVC KD-R901 + DAB Unit and DAB/FM aerial,
Components - Rainbow SLC365's
Subs - 2 x 6W3v3
Amps - Infinity RA7502 and Kenwood KAC-746
Doors/Sub Cubby Holes Dynamted to death etc....

However, I was speaking to the guy at wwwrammobile.com who's going to be installing the system for me(ps dont say I should do it myself as I've been toying with this for weeks! :| )and he's recommended the only obvious thing I'm missing is an EQ for the system....so I just wondered if anyone had any opinions on this given my spec of system above?? Am I really going to benefit from spending a couple of hundred quid for an EQ or not??? If so, any recommednations would be welcome!?

Thanks everyone....

Pete

I've bought a Cleansweep for an identical idea.. all waiting to go in as we speak.

Don't think you need a Cleansweep though - I'm using mine to convert my OEM head unit down to give me decent pre-outs, if you're changing the head unit you've got this already.

You might want an EQ, yes, but you don't need a cleansweep / LC6i.

Will be interested to know how you get on with fitting the 6W3v3's, I've bought the OEM trim to fit them in but haven't ordered those subs yet.. whens your install planned, and roughly how much do they want to do it ?

Unless you're a real sound-geek I can't see the need for a separate EQ. Your replacement JVC apparantly has a "3-band parametric iEQ" which should allow you to tune the sound somewhat.

Not wanting to stick a spanner in the works but a friend (who likes it *loud*) had those rainbows. They sounded great but they basically disintegrated after 3 months (the cone and coil parted ways). Admittedly the company replaced them but he sold them on ebay and got something even more expensive. Can't remember what off the top of my head.

With an aftermarket head, I would not get the clean sweep, that was made in order to flatten out eq on stock head units, by that I mean a lot of manufacturers put in head units that alter the eq according to volume, to try and get the best sounds, e.g. u turn it up and it increasses the bass range and mids etc, a clean sweep sorts that problem out so it stays flat right across the volume range, BMW head units are actually quite good compared to some as i found out, i put a clean sweep in and it hardly made any difference, luckily i bought it cheap and managed to get my money back when i sold it.

Personally im not a great lover of eq units, you set it up on certain tracks and it sounds great, then on others it sounds crap, every recording is different, how its mixed and produced,

I would only put it on if i had a naff spot in my eq sound and need to boost it overall.

Seems the guy is very good at spending your money for you :D

BTW I put the Hertz component speakers in mine with a seperate sub bass and Audison amps

thanks everyone - some valid noted points in there....firstly being that the cleansweep is not for me.... secondly i'll keep an eye on the SLC365s - but to be fair i'm not going to be pushing these speakers hard and i've power matched to my amp - so unless they have design fault and/are just crud then i'm hoping i'll be ok!

Andy - they are wanting around £400-500(labour only apparently 1.5to2days labour :| ) to put this system in...which to be honest i find exp(howeverthe guy sounded like he really knew his sh1t and i got the impression he really cared about the work he was doing and how the finished product would sound) considering i know what's involved, which isn't all that much or too complex....but hey ho, they are dynamatting the cubby hole sub areas 3times over and also dynamatting the doors....so i'm hoping it will sound bloody good! I've also bought the speaker brackets and oem grills for those sub cubby holes like you andy....i've looked at the speaker holes and how they'll mount and they wont just go straight in - some kind of mdf fashioning will need to go one...so they can earn their money by sorting this out for me too...they do fit perfectly in to the actual speaker hole/diameter of the oem speaker bracket tho, just not the holes etc....

Rustyz4 - I think i'm with you mate...I reckon i'd be wanting to change the eq for every other bloody song i'm playing....and i certainly cant be arsed with that....so i reckon what the headunit has will be fine for me!

So so far i'm thinking that the eq isnt for me.....i dont need it too improve my standard oem head unit as i aint using one...and I'm not bothered about changing the settings to perfect every single song i play...so bugger it me thinks....at the end of the day i'm not looking for the best system in the world..i'm just looking for the best system in the world within my budget! ;)

Once i've got everything installed I'll write up a post to let you all know what i reckon to the various components ive had installed....roll on next monday when it'll be ready! :)
