Thanks for the opinions, I've found an auto going to auction(see new thread).
I wondered about the fuel consumption on the auto compared to manual?
Is it a five speed box, do auto (3.0) have sports button or gearbox sports mode.

Mid to high 20s short commutes, mid to high 30s long runs.
5 speed M54, 6 speed N52.
Yes Sport button.

I get about 20 - 22 MPG around town (short 7 mile journey in very slow traffic). Got about 36 MPG on a 70-80 run from Newcastle to Glasgow.

I've written hundreds of posts on Auto mpg showing 45 is achievable and 30 average is more than realistic depending on your routes and driving style.

Never had any concern with my auto, frugal when it counts, think I got high 40 when I tried an eco run on a long motorway run, but it didn't last....

Been reading through these posts with interest. . . .

The smaller engined Zeds are capable on the road and if anyone disagrees then do please come join us in Newcastle; Chezsherman (in his 2.0 litre) and Cherrym (in his 2.5) will illustrate just how capable these Zeds are - with the right driver - and there's plenty of others on the forum who will put to bed that prejudice when it comes to driving enjoyment - and for me that's the key to the Auto/Manual argument.

When AlienZed came and joined us on a run last season, watching him drive with us over Hartside and seeing him and Chezsherman push on in the lead on our 'Un-named road' put an end to my doubts as to whether the Auto box could be fun and capable. If such drivers can get the best out of the Zed be it auto or manual then, in that respect (and if that's what you are worried about have no fear) they are just as much fun and just as capable.

The added positive of dealing with a commute and stop start driving is a real bonus in my view but overall, as everyone says, go try one and have confidence that the one you prefer and choose will be just as effective. (Do keep in mind the difference in value when it comes to selling as well).

Hope you find the right Zed

On a steady motorway run as high as 36mpg, on the frankly walkable drive to work I get around 20-23mpg but on a sporty "like you stole it" drive around 15mpg :driving:

Don't care what anyone else thinks, I love driving my auto 2.5 and that is what counts in my world.

Having had a 35i I always felt that the auto would suit it better. My reasoning being that the Z4 is a GT car and not a sports car.

I sold that car as it never felt very focused however I am older now and recently got a CD30 on my licence

I loved the look of the car and the hard folding roof and am now considering a 2.0i auto
