Ipod connector

My Z has an Ipod connector in the glovebox. What I'm trying to find out is how I can shuffle the songs and use the steering wheel controls to skip through tracks. I put the ipod into shuffle mode but when I use the steering wheel control to skip a track it reverts to playing the songs in alphabetical order. Is there a way? I don't have Idrive.

how can it control the iPod if you're just sticking an aux lead into the headphone socket? what year is your car?

I'm not using the aux in socket, there's an Ipod connector wired in inside the glovebox. It's a 59 plate. Just checked again no sign of a usb port anywhere, was the first thing I looked for when I got the car

It might be aftermarket then. i've got iPod integration in my 09 E89. this consists of a usb socket and aux socket in the centre armrest. i had a to buy a cable with a usb plug and 3.5mm jack at one end and an iPod connector at the other. i don;t use shuffle that often, but don't remember seeing the behaviour you mentioned.

Sounds like you are using the Ycable, I have one which I kept from my Mini. Everything worked ok in the Mini using the Ycable but as I have no usb in the Z I can't use the cable. Might just have to stick with alphabetical I guess. Might speak to my audio guy

Why bother with your iPod?
I put music onto a USB and plug that into the centre arm rest socket. That gives full function and I just leave it there - I won't forget to take my iPod one day!

Its cheaper than a Y cable.

USB works a treat!

What option do you select on the unit to listen to the iPod? i use the y cable on mine (wish i had thought about a usb stick) but to use shuffle there is a button on the head unit which does the trick, i think it's called RND or something similar, assume it is an abbreviation of random.

There are 2 CD options on the unit, one does the disc player in the head unit and the other does the ipod. I'll have a look tomorrow to see if I have a RND or similar button!

I would nip into the dealer and see one of the techies !
There's always one who's clued up re the music / iTunes side of things.

Sorted! The RND option is there and works a treat. Thanks for this, happy bunny now :D
