iPod connector in glove box?

Hi guys,had car for 5 months & forgot to ask what this cable is for? Have tried plugging in iPhone & iPod but says not supported or some such I'm sure you all will know & I'm being a plumb

It sounds like the connector to play through the multiplayer port but it only plays playlists on iPod /iPhone set up in a specific way so if they are not there will not play
"Not supported "may be a mismatch between age of iPod and cable ( Apple changed the pins for charging ) mine was fitted in 2010 and works with a Nano of similar vintage
Does cable disappear behind the Head unit through a hole in side of that bulkhead

You can get an in-line charge adapter if needed, that will convert the 12V from the OEM adapter cable to the 5V needed for the newer ipods/iphones.
