If you dont always carry your ipod.... guess i just havent got used taking me ipod everywhere having only just jumped into the world of digital music

away on holiday and buy some cds and dont want to keep changing the cd in the main unit....

because you can?
I've got an old G4 ipod in my car. Have a G5 for normal use. Just update the ipod once a month or so, and leave it in the car.

You can pick them up quite cheap to be honest.

But get you about holidays etc

Anybody used the Drive & Play..?

I had one in my MINI and loved it apart from the FM transmitter. It has to be aux input or it sounds crap.

Sorry it took so long to respond but been busy...

Some have asked about my Ipod (Ipod Video 5G 60Gig) connection that uses the bottom connector. I bought two of these cables on Ebay for $8.00 each.
One white and one black, like the one on the left.
I did not like using a RCA to 3.5mm converter (on the left) so I modified the white one on the right. Removed the spring wheel and shortened it up then added a 3.5mm tip. I just did not connect the video portion of the cable to anything.

This is how it looks in the car.

One thing about using this type of cable, your Ipod volume control will not work. The output is set (high) so you must use your stereo volume control 100% of the time. To my ears the audio quality is better than the radio or CD, but of course my entire MP3 collection (130Gigs) was ripped using a minimum of 256K/sec or better, so the file sizes are a larger than most... but the audio quality does not suffer due to MP3 compression.

I do have a site that you can buy just the Ipod data connector and make your own cables. http://home.swipnet.se/ridax/connector.htm

I have found this type of Ipod cable that also has a power plug in addition to the audio/video cables. I just may get that and see how it works also...

I am thinking of moving the Cell/Ipod mount to the left side of the dash, so it is closer to the driver but leave the GPS unit right where it is. It is only attached with a good quality double sticky back tape. If you do have to remove this type of mount, use a product called 'OOPS!'. It will take the glue off without marring the finish or softening any plastic. It is better than Acetone, Denatured Alcohol or hair spray..

My GPS is a Garmin Nuvi 660 and a ProClip mount. It has a nice feature of HandsFree (Bluetooth) for my Cell Phone. Works great and I can import my contacts from my cell phone, accept incoming calls and dial directly from the GPS unit..... I already have the hotel for HC08 saved in the GPS....

thanks for the post shipkiller.

did you ever try using the 3.5mm headphone jack instead of the line out converter on the bottom? if so, i assume there is a noticeable difference between the two?

I use the headphone jack in my truck. Using the headphone jack in the Z looks trashy.... in my car.
I don't notice a difference but my truck has a better sound system in it.. I think it all comes down to how you saved your MP3's. The higher the bit rate the better the sound..

yeah see, im afraid to drop any more money on something i wont be happy with =/ I was hoping you were going to say that there was a noticeable difference between the two.

For me- there is way too much noise in the background - I assume from the mp3 player's amp and it isnt nearly loud enough (and of course, turning it up makes the amplifier noise progressively worse).

(all my mp3s are ripped in 240-355 variable bit rate)

ok well i just ordered a line out connector on ebay. once I get it i'll see how much of a difference it makes with my nano. if i like it i'll sell the zune and buy a real ipod.

Sorry to go off-topic, but Shipkiller how do you find the satnav when it's mounted down there? I have a Tomtom ONE XL and have recently bought a Carcomm mount, but I can't find a decent way to attach it to the car. On the one hand, the Brodit mount is too low but on the other hand you sit low in the car anyway. I'd prefer something around the top of the dash level, but then you're limited to windscreen suckers or the BMW Professional Nav kit.

So, is it too low down or OK? Thinking of ordering the Brodit mount this weekend.

My Garmin GPS works fine, for me, at that level. The audio level from the GPS is ok unless I have the radio up loud.

I use the Proclip for the GPS. Works really well..

ok- I got my line out connector in today.

its WAY better than the headphone jack. no volume issues, no horrible amp noise.

BUT:

its still not good enough. I'm pretty sure at this point that the connection is actually skipping the carver amp. the speakers behind the seats and the door woofers are barely putting out any sound with it connected.

SO: it may well be a good solution for those with the non-carver/DSP/whatevertheheckitis system, but not those with it.

now: anyone know for sure if the BMW ipod connector uses the carver amp?
