iPod Aux Lead Query.

I have an auxiliary lead into the back of the 'Business' head unit and am quite happy with that except for not being able to charge the iPod while it's in use.

Has anyone used one of these with the auxiliary lead?

Does it provide a line out signal or is it more like a headphone output?
Does anyone know of a better alternative?
I don't really want to go to the expensive of a Dension or Dice unit really.

Thanks for your help.

Yup, got one in my car...

the lead you plug into the AUX socket goes into the Belkin kit, then the belkin dock plug fits your iPod, simples :)

There is also a volume control on the belkin unit so there is some amplification there, Charges too :)

only downside is no control over the iPod itself (but that's what passengers or Shuffle is for).

sounds like it would do what you require

looks like a neat bit of kit,so good find Andys so of to ebay i go
Just ordered off Amazon £3.99 + free p&p

If you visit the Apple store they have many more car/iPod devices to offer you. :)

But not at £3.99 i bet

Ah yes, you do have a point there :) then the white may not blend in with the interior color combination :) mine is hidden under the center armrest the iPod even has it's own pocket :)

(Mind you the Apple store has quite a collection, got one for my Jag that sticks right into the cigarette lighter and supports the iPod all playlists visible you can change it by the touch of your finger tip. All wireless except for the power source of the cigarette lighter (you might have seen them). I think I paid just over $60- with tax. (£37.00).

So if your interior is white then all is 8) :) otherwise I say it is worth thinking about, after all your car deserves the best :)

Thanks all for the feedback.
Like you Gannet, I'm quite happy with 'shuffle on the ipod so no issue there.
I was planning to add in an additional lighter socket in the glove box just to power this as I hate trailing wires.
Therefore, the colour is not an issue either.
I'll have a quick look on the Apple store incase there is a better solution but it looks like this could be the way to go.....
.....for me anyway!

aha a man after me own heart :)

I have an extender socket routed behind all the panels into the glovebox. All relevant plugs ins (TomTom, 2 Phone chargers, iPod lead, aux lead etc) now all looped back to the ash tray area. take out the ash tray itself and all cables can be neatly hidden away under the foldable lid :) only cables left trailing go to the relevant device plugged in

I just use the aux in for my iphone for music and a usb cigarette lighter thing and the standard iphone cable to charge it.

see: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14303&p=211866#p211866

Using it like this is also a poor mans hands free as the microphone still works while the aux out is plugged in. Just don’t turn up the stereo too much or you get feedback

Thought I'd let you all know the route I ended up taking.
After a bit more digging I found this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kensington-33429EU-LiquidAUX-iPhone-iPod/dp/B0011UK2HE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1290245350&sr=8-1
I eventually decided I'd give this a go and I'm extremely impressed with it.
It plays back via the auxiliary socket and the audio quality is brilliant. It charges at the same time which is ideal.
The remote allows control over the essential functions of play/pause, skip back/forward and shuffle.
The remote can be removed from the steering wheel mount (which is a bit naff!) leaving a neat looking unit which I'm planning on attaching to the dash with a small piece of velcro.
So, with a lighter socket which goes off with the ignition, there is no need to touch the iPod at all as, once power is removed from the device, the connected iPod shuts down after a couple of minutes. On start up you just need to press play on the remote.
I know it's a bit more expensive than the original lead mentioned but for the extra control, it's worth it.

Item arrived today have tried it but it dosen't support charging for the ipod touch but worked ok apart from that :|
So not lost much only £3.99 so it will be going on ebay later

I've only tried the Kensington one with my 2nd gen Nano.
Will try it with my 2nd gen Touch tomorrow and report back on the charging status!

For anyone who's interested, I can confirm the Kensington unit does charge a 2nd Gen Touch.
Fits my needs perfectly!
