iPhone Snap-In

All threads I’ve found seem dated, and iPhones change faster than I change oil.

So what’s the skinny on a snap-in that isn’t specific to one iPhone model/size, and accommodates cases too?

Thanks.

Found that in my recent purchase too, luckily the previous owner was kind enough to install a blank piece of BMW plastic, to cover a connector which is years out of date I suspect
Not enough room for my phone that is certain. I do have a 14 year old iPod that still works though.... I wonder..

Because support for phones in E89s stopped in 2015 there are three issues with snap in versions

Be aware that different snap ins for the same phone come in different versions...some support basic phone functions others provide extended support for control and display of streaming media..

Since there was no s/w development post 2015 you could risk it and put a later snap in for say an iPhone 6/78 etc but you’re on your own as to whether any/all functions will work

Most phones will via the USB socket in the central arm rest support most phones with most functions...iPhone is the best supported..android support is more variable..

Hey-Hey. Same here, the previous owner left that blank piece in the car. It fits the 6 size (with a case), and it's the size I intend to own going forward. I'll keep the a cigarette charger like you, and I think I can get all I need out of the iPhone via Bluetooth. Hopefully the Google Maps app speaks via Bluetooth. Otherwise, no biggie.

I have an iPhone 5 set up like an iPod in mine, but I drive so little, the thing is always run down, so I have to drive 30 minutes before it turns on again

I set this up yesterday and don’t drive the car regularly. I was advised to take it out the car and put it in a docking station so it’s ready for use when I need it. Absolutely ideal in theory, as long as I remember to take it when I go out. I’m thinking about leaving something on the steering wheel to remind me to start with

Slightly away from the OP's question, but I notice in Roddy's picture above, the car has a USB/jack socket.
Why not use this (with a Y cable) to utilise an iPhone or iPod?

I have this set up on an old iPod and it works fine, and yes DSB the steering wheel controls work - volume and tracks

Do the steering wheel controls change tracks with an iphone plugged into the USB?

I keep an iphone in the car but, again is always flat!

Yes is does allow the normal use of the mfsw and another bonus is when it’s plugged into the usb it shows all album artwork details on the iDrive screen,

Ok cool, does this work with apple music only, or Spotify too?

I’ve only tested it for a short time to make sure it worked, it was music in my iTunes on the device I played and that had full functionality, including artwork. I haven’t tried Spotify

Made this myself, it's still only in "proof-of-concept" stage at the moment though (mainly as it works and I've got better things to be getting on with  ). The socket is powered from the USB on my iDrive MMI box, which also acts as a secodary connection for wired Android Auto should I have problems with the wireless connection. It could just as easily befor an iPhone.
My phone just plugs into the USB-C plug in the base, which was a desk stand before I cut it and glued it to a spare section of black plastic. It works very well indeed and is very stable as the phone doesn't move around at all.

Now I appreciate that this thread is about the OE phone bracket, I just thought I'd show this here for those that don't have one but would like something similar for the more modern smart phones

Given the massive changes in telephone hardware all the time that's a good way to square that circle..

I think, since you have time on your hands, that you should test the connectivity of various later snap in adapters for us?

They are only about £80 a pop..

Please advice when done..
