Iphone Siri Handsfree

Anyone managed to get Siri to activate via the multi function steering wheel? Or any other solution? I dont have a MFSW but what I am thinking of doing is buying one then cannibalising an iphone 5 set of headphones wiring the microswitches in the iphone headset directly up to the microswitches on a MFSW cannot see any reason why this would not work and then would have complete handsfree control over the iphone including skip forward, back, volume and siri activation using the 3 microswitches with the audio being passed to the aux in unless there is a more elegant solution like bluetooth?

siri is a big pile of wank i wouldnt bother. unless you live in yankland (where i suspect its better) or have a permanet connetcion to wifi ive found it more dangerous to use than just making a call.

interesting project tho.

so the plan is to use a standard pair of headphones to utilise the wires and iphone connector.

good luck

yeah thats the plan, i should be able to just get away with using 1 button so all the other buttons will still operate the Z4 OEM stereo. The middle button in the iphone headset does several things.... 1 long press activate siri, 2 short presses skip next track, 3 short presses skip back a track. I love the fact that with siri you can specify it to play certain songs or artists very useful IMO as navigating itunes while driving can be a pain in the ass if you dont know where you put a track.

I imagine the microswitches on the MFSW will be on a circuit board, it will be a case of making a small slice over the track that the micro switch sits on then wiring directly to the switch. The harder challenge will be passing the wiring down to the back of the dash... i assume BMW have some funky way of contacts touching other contacts as the wheel needs to turn and any wire would end up breaking after 1000's of miles being twisted running down some channel... i have never opened up the wheel so no idea maybe someone else can comment who has.

Will be nice to do the Z4M steering wheel mod / re-covering at the same time i guess too ..

ive had a simialr problem when trying to get buttons onto the steering wheel of my westy. i solved it using a twisted cable similar to telephone flex. the reason id didnt use telephone flex was i needed to carry the voltage so needed thicker cable. i had it just hanging down slighlty between the dash and wheel but on the zed you may be able to hide it in the cowl (there isnt any on the westy so nowhere to hide it)

granted lock to lock is only 2.5 turns but it gives you an idea. i fixed the cable rigid using a P clip to the back of the wheel/dash so it wasnt going to stress any joints. it worked well.

Siri never understands a word I say when using it via Bluetooth in the car. The microphone on the steering column must not be good enough, especially with road noise

Just by holding down the home key on the iPhone as normal. If the car and the phone are connected via Bluetooth, Siri talks over the car speakers.
