You can go online and use a free imei checker... Will tell you if its locked. They do not work only Apple has access in their servers

Id locked ring vodaphone £20 and 2-3 days and they will unlock it for you.

whilst they don't have access to the database, I'm pretty sure they have access to the carriers db or similar - which would also keep it on record.
You can very definitely unlock iPhones (at least the 3gs) from those guys who offer the service (either online, or in a store).
I got mine unlocked for £15 from a highstreet phone repair store! (how they do it tho, is a mystery - I expect they have some sort of "insider" help?)

They didn't unlock it they hacked it and if carrier locked as soon as the new owner tries to update the iOS the iPhone will lock back to the original carrier as the record is in Apple servers until the carrier requests unlocking
Hardly smart advice when OP is selling it as unlocked and is clearly not trying to scam the buyer

well it appears that its locked. and i have placed another request with Vodafone for the unlock code! ill also be going into my Vodafone shop and seeing if they can do it in store as its meant to be going to its new owner tonight!

It will take days ,Vodaphone have a process they say can take up to 30 days .They MAY initiate the process but certainly not sort it in store

No they didn't. The phone was running the latest baseband and was not unlockable via that method anymore.
Plus, when I connected it to iTunes, it then clearly stated my phone was unlocked.
Since that point up until upgrading to the iPhone 4, it remained unlocked and updated perfectly.

Smart advice? I'm not giving advice, I'm advising you that you're wrong in your assumption.

48 hours to 10 working days is the average processing time for Vodafone iPhone unlock.
Nothing you can do in store though.. doubt they'd be able to speed it up either

Most of the non apple unlockers actually tell you to restore the phone and insert a non (vodaphone sim) same practice as if the network did this - i had my ip4 unlocked via somewhat illegitimate means online - as i used to use a gervey sim and it was bugging me!

As a side note to the op - I would get it unlocked and get the receipt from the store - sell it to your guy and tell him its in the process of being unlocked - the receipt being the proof... it does take time.. and also the phone will need to be restored once complete

You'll wipe restore the phone - new person puts in their sim.. job done!

just trying to find out if it defiantly needs a non vodafone sim card in to complete the unlock? or if i can just wipe and restore it?

When i unlocked my phone i needed to insert a non vodaphone sim after a restore... however Once you restore it, if the new owner does have a voda sim then it will be unlocked when then insert it.

If the new owner has vodaphone then they wouldnt know better-but it will still be unlocked.

Yes, to complete the unlock you need to put a non-Vodafone SIM in. Have done this for 3 vodafone contract iPhones now... You can request to have the phone blocked by Vodafone for free after 6 months on a contract.

To unlock my iPhone I got the IEME number from the handset, or reciept that Apple should have given you if you switched your phone and supply this to your carrier. They will then notify Apple who will then free up the phone on your next connection to a PC with a different carrier SIM.

When you connect with a different SIM there is a popup which says 'Your iPhone is now unlocked' or something.

Unfortunately it took about a week for me, which doesn't help your situation

NO it will not ,all Apple retail store and Apple Online iPhones are sold not locked ,that is why you pay full Retail price

CARPHONEWAREHOUSE do sell iPhones that will lock to the first carrier whose sim is used and needless to say they also sell at full retail price ,less £1 to make it look "cheaper"
