iPhone and bluetooth problem

Right folks, I upgraded my Blackberry Pearl 8120 to an iPhone a couple of days ago and the iPhone will not recognise the bluetooth kit that is installed in my car whatsoever. The kit worked absolutely fine with my BB, and the BB would automatically find and connect to it whenever I started the engine. In fact, despite being 'visible', my iPhone will neither find other devices, nor let other devices find it.

I desperately need to sort out a way of having the ability to make bluetooth/handsfree calls again. Do I need to try a different kit, or is the problem with my phone?

Halp! :(

What kit have you got Spud?

Mine is OEM without satnav, and my iPhone 3GS connects fine. Still a bit of a pain in the back side to turn the blutooth on as I have to go setting>general>blutooth>on>connect (BMW) - thats 5 buttons just to turn it on/off :( My old Sony C902 was programmed to do it with only 2 buttons pressed!

It might be your UFL, works fine in mine. I thought the older ones had compatibility problems.
Once its paired it should auto connect and transfer the phone book.

I had trouble getting it to pair. I tried guess 3 or 4 times before it succeeded. However, since then no problem.

I have paired 4 iPhones to my car. The first was the original, the next 3 were 3Gs, the first 3Gs being replaced for wifi problems when it was new, the second being replaced when I dropped it and fractured the screen. That being said, none of them paired the first time and all of them took multiple attempts to pair to the car. It is best to start by resetting the phone, holding down the home and top switch until the white apple appears. Start with the car off. Make your phone discoverable and turn on the car and press the right button on the wheel. The radio should say searching and after what seems like an eternity, the phone should display the screen where you put in the pin for the car. That being done they should pair. It might take multiple attempts to get them to pair. As memory serves me, it took 4 attempts this last time to get them to pair.

Afraid I don't have much useful to suggest apart from to confirm it definitely should work - I'm using an iPhone 3GS running the 3.1 firmware.

I would say make sure you've deleted all the old pairings or pairing attempts from both the phone and the car and then start afresh.

Could be worth doing a firmware upgrade on your phone and also on the car (ie: download the latest updates for the NAV computer - I suspect they will include updates to the Bluetooth firmware too - I'm sure another forum member could/will jump in and comment here?).

Does you iPhones Bluetooth appear to other devices, ie: your laptop or other phones?

Are you definitely doing the right pairing procedure for the car? (It's something like ignition position 1 then press the speaker button on the phone clip-in tray between the seats)

Hmm, think I'm all out of suggestions...

How do I delete a pairing from the car handset thing?

It really is an old basic thing - literally just a holder/handset thing, with a button on each side, and a mic stuck on the rear view mirror. None of these little parrot screen type things I see around.

Also: my phone cannot find any other phones using BB, and they can't find it. Despite the fact bluetooth is on and it says it's "discoverable"!

Oh! I didn't realise you weren't using the built-in BMW bluetooth kit - I really couldn't say, you'd have to try and dig out the instructions from the manufacturer of the device. There's usually a button which needs pressing and it'll cause a light (tends to be blue) to flash repeatedly to signify it's looking for a device to pair with.

As I sit here now with my iPhone in discoverable mode it can't see any other devices and I have two discoverable bluetooth devices in the room (a Mac with Bluetooth enabled and a Nokia N95). The computer however can see the iPhone and the N95 can also see the iPhone.

I suspect it's the iPhone which doesn't show any other devices other than bluetooth headsets in discoverable mode as it's Bluetooth is heavily limited to just (from memory) Bluetooth Headsets and Bluetooth Audio devices.

I think you need to dig out the instructions for your headset/hands-free kit and get it into discoverable mode, then check the iPhone again and it'll probably show up :)

I think mine is just an old, simply aftermarket kit. Though I've no idea what as it was in there when I bought the car.

Spud, if your phone is having problem finding other bluetooth device, could it be more a fault of the phone?

Can you connect any other phones to the car? Also the OEM device will only connect upto 5 devices - try resetting the bluetooth in car as already mentioned, the manual (sorry too cold to goto my car to get it!) will have instructions on how to reset like.....

I've searched all the forums and can't believe nobody's mentioned a TCU problem on their Z4. Anybody had issues with BT/Assist unit dieing in cold weather?

i got an IQ bluetooth kit from the O2 shop and had it fitted to my car, theese work for the iphone, great paired first time no problem.

Funny you mention that - when it was -2 degrees in uk couple of weeks ago my BT wouldn't pair up with the iphone. Decided it was too cold to be fiddling with it and just went home. Worked ok since, and it rarely gets thats cold in here so I'm not too bothered but I can see it being a problem in other part of the world
