:| After having 4 iphones since they came out, for the first time ever iv had the missfortune to drop mine and have the glass screen smash, hufff!
But never fear! After talking to people at work that have had this same issue, iv bought a new Screen & Tools etc.... for £19 next day delivery from Amazon

I have also found loads of "How to" video's on YouTube, So watch this space. Ill let you know how much of a pain (or how easy it is to do yourself).

Has anyone on here done it??
Any tips (not pay someone else to do it lol)

I suppose if you watch the vids on YouTube it should be OK. If my screen went I would do the same, I think Apple charge over £100 for a new screen.

Heart breaking.

19 only for a screen?

Here there is a guy who fixes them for 140 euros.

be wary of non OEM replacements parts if you are like me a bit OCD with devices you will notice differences... e.g replacement Iphone 3G screen i once swapped out had poor colours and appeared dull , IPAD 2 digitizer was not as sensitive to touch in certain places that drove me crazy, the screen also stuck out a little more than the OEM one. It one of them things that just annoy you as you know it's not quite right. Apple should swap it out for about 120 quid in the shop even if you have broken the screen but that is still a lot of cash. These days i just pay the orange care as i rely on it too much. 12 quid / month 24 hour replacement service for peace of mind as the iphone 5 costs at least 500 to replace.

fingers crossed ;-)

Ye the screen will be fine just the front glass panel. Relatively easy to repair! Although non OEM parts dont fit well... but OEM will be a small fortune.

ive replaced almost every component on my 3gs. took 6 hours the first time to replace the top loom. 30 min for the battery  screen only took me 10 min to replace although it is a pain to get apart due to the glue. would also mention about cheap parts. got a £5 screen and it broke within a few days.

i swapped out the dock port on my 4s.

Piece of cake and took maybe 20 mins which required all the whole PCB board to be removed.

I recently dropped my iPhone 4 and broke the screen. I looked into a replacement glass and the cheapest replacement glass I could find was $75 for an OEM screen with a tool kit and instructions for replacement. Because the phone also got wet and got into the speakers when I dropped it I decided to replace it and purchased a black 32 G iPhone 5. Really liking the 5...

I have done this 3 time on my 4s now :(
Lots of little screws and bits to be dismantled, just make your you've got a nice tidy work surface. I use an A4 piece of paper and draw a little sketch of the phone and place the screws etc where they came from as I go along.
Good Luck
Sam

There is an LCD screen, the glass, and the digitiser, which I think is part of the glass.

Anyway, I dropped my 3GS and broke the screen. I bought just the new glass at first, but I damaged the LCD removing the glass from the LCD. Also the quality wasn't so great.

In the end I went for a £30 glass/digitiser/LCD combo and it's a 5 min job to swap, easy too, and goes together nicely. Downside is that I can still tell it's not as good as OEM and I've had a lazy pixel on there these last few weeks, which has now gone again.

If you are not fussed about it not being absolutely perfect then it's ok, but if you are a perfectionist person you won't be happy with a £10 screen or the amount of work that is impossible to get right when re-fitting (ie, glue/seals not perfect)

Chrisj900, I have to do the battery and top loom on mine at some stage. It's cheap enough to get all the bits but cripes it's a lot of small fiddly work haha! I bet it'd take me longer...!

Heads up ,
if iPhone is in warranty or AppleCare any non authorised tampering invalidates the warranty ( basically anyone other than Apple )
and also removes it from the out of warranty replacement programme in future

'Apparently' you can get JUST the glass for £9, but its such a pain to change just that as its attached to the screen. This company offers the actual LCD Screen already attached to the glass front etc... (I dont really understand it myself lol). but looking through their ebay amazon feed back, there are lots of happy iphone owners (fingers crossed).

I just have to hope the cats are out tomorrow night as they LOVE to watch and help with anything that's done one the table lol (I can just picture one now tapping a screw round like a dead mouse, ughh)
The You tube video is 10min long and thats just the dismantling part, which i reckon will actually take 20min, and then repeat in revers to put back together which will always be more fiddly.

GOOD LUCK!!

I had my 4s open recently as the screen had been smashed. I also bought one of those led panels for the back so the apple logo glows when the screen does (google it, quite cool).
After fiddling around for a bit i gave up and put it back together. Its like bloomin micro surgery :( .
Im an engineer and used to tampering with electrics but this was too much effort for my fat fingers considering my local phone shop said they would do it for £50. So, an hour browsing the shops while i waited and my phones good as new now with a new screen. :)

Saw the ifixit instructions and instantly thought no way!!!! But if your careful and take your time, I guess you should be ok, but I wouldn't fancy it!

3GS generation phone looks simpler than the 4 ones.

I wouldn't want to touch a 4 considering how hard it was to do the 3GS.

Not impossible, but stuff just never seems to go back together right. I suppose with practice you get good so the people in shops will hopefully do it really nicely, but since DIY you're doing it for the first (and possibly last time), every mistake will stick and stand out :D

PS, my phone was way out of warranty/contract. In contract I'd probably take it to Apple and just take the hit. Then if something does go wrong with it later you are covered by Apple. They are generally really good if stuff goes dodgy by giving replacements etc... would be a shame to be left high/dry if it failed in some other way that were expensive to fix and they wouldn't honour the warranty that'd see you getting a FREE new phone :D

:D Yayyyy JOB DONE!!!

What a head ache tho. 3 hours from start to finish!! I guess if i did it again i could get it down to a hour. but its just fiddle as hell with tiny screws and parts.
I could have got it done for £35 - £40 (guessing with cheap copy parts iv seen them for as cheap as £7), my cost £19.99 looks as good as the origninal, but if i brake id have to have a good think before attempting it myself again................ Lifes too short lol
