Hi Guys,

Thought I would let you know that one of my colleagues knows the marketing manager for Apple.

In June the new Iphone comes out, Ipad as well, and apparently, if you get both at the same time (some kind of bundle) you get a reduced rate on internet access and potentially the ipad. If you are looking to upgrade your phone and your existing contract ends soon, then wait till June. In the meantime go on to a symplicity contract for the time being.

Thanks,

Steve

Eeeek.. Not a fan but I won't post that here.

Does that mean that some concrete specs are around for the 4G now? Does it offer anything different?

Good shout. My contract comes to an end in May and was going to move from 3G to 3GS. Think i will hang fire for now

No idea on specs, he basically told her not to do anything until June, just go simplicity contract, so im going along with that too :)

Everything else was top secret.

So in June, I will become a sheep like many others lol.

Can't wait for 4G, came out of contract on 3G in Jan & cud have got 3GS FOC but holding out for the new one as well!

hmm, i was considering an ipad and will defiantly get the new iphone as im on payg on o2 at the moment. whats steering me away from the ipad is that it may not be able to tether to the iphone, no way am i paying for a phone contract and a 2nd web contract, as i wont be using iphone and ipad at the same time! if you can tether the iphone to a laptop why not an ipad.

erm the ipad is out late april, both wifi & 3g models, this has been pretty much confirmed along with the usa street date of the 4th april i believe. id love the ipad but i get the feeling ill wait till the 2nd gen and keep my old mbp for now. if the ipad had enough guts to do 75% of my computing needs id sell the mbp, its about 4 years old so would fetch the price of an entry ipad i think.

Apparently it *might* have, Video Calling, a 5mp Camera and a removable battery...

Someone has found a line of code in the iPhone SDK that suggests a front-camera may be on the way... though I would doubt the removable battery rumour.

Would be fantastic if it did look like that mockup! Unfortunately the reason the 3G and 3GS have the horrible plastic back over the nice shiny metal one of the 2g is that they couldn't get a decent 3g signal with a metal case. The iPad is a single block of aluminium though so maybe that shows they found a way... or that the big screen counters the metal... I hope it's the former!

</applegeek> :)

My contract ended in December and I'm just rolling on a month to month basis, basically waiting for the next model. Good info.

Just a question about 4g networks! How widespread is it at the moment and how often will the phone be actually on 4g and not 3g?

Like the sound of a removable battery!

I won't be getting one this time round as I haven't had my 3Gs long.

Wonder if the new one will fit the present BMW cradle? My 3gs works well in the car in the cradle.

I'm afraid my removable battery comment was a tad sarcastic - it won't be coming, and the Video calling was a reference to the fact that all other handsets have had it for 3yrs.

:) This is one of the biggest problems with the iPhone - hype. There's no such thing as a 4g *network* - this means 4th Gen iPhone.

Best current networks are 3g and 2.5g (2g with data) but they're upping the speed of data progressively in some areas.

Agreed there is 0% chance of a removable battery.... and to be honest I would take any intel this far in advance with a pinch of salt. I doubt UK marketing managers know jack this far ahead of time.

though the smart money is indeed on a June/July release for an updated iPhone. That's when they've always done it in the past... and that's what I'm waiting for before upgrading :)

Saying that... my 2g is serving me perfectly well; unlocked and jailbroken, I have it on T-mobile PAYG... unlimited texts and internet for £10 a month

Indeed, the iPhones are on more of a fixed release cycle than the other products as they tie in with mobile contracts, it's more the exact deals that are kept secret, along with the specs of the phone itself. Apple are notorious for keeping things quiet, and people "in the know" are under NDA anyway, hence the "take it with a pinch of salt" :)

They sure have hidden that battery in there!! Not exactly rocket science to replace though to be fair!

I still cant see the point of iPad.

It uses iTunes for apps - iTunes are designed for iPhone/iPod's native resolution and not iPad's much better res. This means its a bit like playing Playstation games on HD TV. So the higher res would be for general internet trawling or watching video. But does that need to be touch screen??

Portability is great but its not as good iPhone (naturally). And internet/video on iPhone is already pretty good.

iPad doesn't sound powerful enough to replace home laptop/desktop. So what will it do thats useful? I think its taking the failed haritage of PDAs from 90s/early 2000s personally.

p.s. I bough small sony vio netbook thats thine and small enough to fit into pocket last year for £600 (concept of its usage is similar to iPad) to take it to travelling. Although it worked great on holiday, there is nothing iphone cant do the vio couldn't, except for keyboard maybe. Its now sitting gethering dust in corner of my study less then 12 month after as its too slow to use as general and not portable enough (battery lasts about 3 hours only, no phone on it) to take with me.

I have now heard 3 seperate lets say sources (no one directly associated with apple-always my friends friend etc) mention that in June the next gen Iphone was due. I guess I will wait and get one at the time even though it means sticking with pay as you go until then (costing me an arm and a leg). My only concern is I don't want to wait 2 more months only to find out I can't get it through vodafone (or any UK company) for another 4+ months.
