I think someone was asking about this a little while ago.

I have now tried my phone in my own car.
You only need idrive for music
you only need bluetooth for phone AND music (but no track listing).

I would advise getting the snap-in adaptor which allows a direct USB connection to the idrive.

I essentially paired my phone using bluetooth
and also plugged in via snap-in adaptor (this is a dealer fit or personal fit after buying online, about £90??)

becuase i got the connectivity package i also got an additional USB interface and AUX input for connecting laptop etc.

Once paired (very easy to do via telephone selection and selecting bluetooth). I had all my contacts tel no. and addresses, so that they can be called or navigated to. ( i did have to set my default country as GB)
the music listing included album artwork, track listing, playlists ..pretty much identical to ipod functions.

Once paired, there was no need to pair again, it automatically recognised phone/car combo. I just simply put phone in armrest adaptor.

I also got the passwords/username to use my iphone for BMW remote to check car location, remote lock (or unlock if locked keys in car!), and a few other functions (that aren't that useful)...although had to register phone on BMW connected drive on internet. This also allows me to route plan online or via iphone and send directly to idrive Nav system before even getting in the car.

It was all fairly intuitive, but if anyone was wondering how to connect their iphone to idrive, more than happy to answer further questions. Frankly i am impressed with it all!

EDIT: PS I will take a photo of snap-in adaptor in place when I get a chance.

I did the same with my iPhone 3GS. Works well. Glad to see it works on the iPhone 4 also as that may be my next upgrade later in the year.

I also use the snap in adapter. Very clean instal. I will have to get another for the iPhone 4 as it won't fit the iPhone 3 model! Different shape!

iPhones are refreshed annually or close enough. You may want to consider the next one (whatever they call it). Apparently it's planned for Sept rather than the normal June release.

I considered this as I always upgrade my iPhone. For this reason I have a iphone - jack/usb cable which goes behind my dash (this charges and plays audio) although track selection remains on the iPhone. Therefore I'm pretty much future proof :) (unless they swap pin locations, then i just need to buy another cable for £5 of ebay)

since there is an additional USB and aux input and 2 extra 12v sockets, I should hopefully be futureproofed
