Ipads - anyone know much about them?

I'm not normally an Apple guy, but its my girlfriends Birthday next week, her laptop died a while back and sharing my work one has been a pain for both of us.

So I'm thinking a tablet might be a good way to go. I'd normally go for an Android based one, but whats making me think of an Ipad is IF you can load iTunes onto it and play music through it just like an iPod? If so that could kill another bird as we need a decent one for the wedding.

So, any iPad users? Whats it like with playing music? Does it have the same connections the iPod does? So could connect to external music playing devices?

Also any recommended places to buy them from?

Bought the wife an iPad 2 for Christmas as she was fed up using the desktop PC for Skype etc when I'm away, anyway I never quite got them but am totally converted now.
As for plugs etc it uses exactly the same ones as an iPod, iPhone etc it has a earphone socket and comes with iTunes preinstalled, I even used it for watching a movie whilst killing time in an airport. You will however need to connect it to a PC to get the music on it unless you are already using iCloud.

Hope that helps.

Whilst you can indeed get sound out through the earphone port you get better quality via the dock connector with a dedicated lead (if you buy the Apple lead it'll also allow you to hook it up to an external TV which can be handy in hotels etc).

Ports are exactly as per iPod and it comes with iTunes preloaded although as already said you will need a PC/iMac/Laptop to transfer files to it (or iCloud).

Oh and it has a (truly dreadful) speaker (for music - fine for movies). Mine's an iPad2 - I understand they improved the speaker on 'new iPad'.

Love that you're using it for your wedding - got visions of 100+ guests dancing round an iPad on the floor...sort of modern equivalent of dancing round your handbag?!?!?

Had an iPad from launch day 2 years ago. Now on an iPad 2 and wouldn't be without it. Using the output into any speaker dock or amp will give the same quality as an iPod, I use a set of Harman Kardon Sound Sticks and use the headphone socket. Sound is great.
Get one and you won't be disappointed.

 Its not a traditional type wedding, we're getting married in Italy and not having the usual disco afterwards.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Best place to buy?

My iPad 2 has been surgically attached to me since I got it, and like RichardG I didn't get the whole iPhone thing prior to this impulse buy. I am sitting in the car park with the roof down waiting to pick my son up from school while I type this. The user interface is totally intuitive, and the tactile experience is second to none - the iPhone still annoys me a bit as it is too small. Once you have iCloud music, vids and anything else it allows is easy to synch. Some of the docks for it specifically look amazing, though I don't own one yet. Your fiancé will love it, and you for buying it for her

Go into Comet or someplace and have a play with a display one this weekend, as it sounds like you've not used one before ? You'll be hooked, I promise. I now want touch screen everything, and find myself reaching for my laptop's screen with a finger increasingly often

Just bought an IPad 3, still trying to decide whether I like it or not. As a media device it's pretty good as long as you don't mind ITunes, however it is pretty restrictive if you want use different file types and I am astounded by the lack of basic functionality, eg writing an email in the email app you can't add an attachment...... Contemplating returning it and getting an Asus transformer prime instead!

Sounds great. Are they any apps/tools on the iPad to enable viewing or even editing of Microsoft Office products? Ideally Word and Excell? Also can you print from them?

I have an ipad2 and just ordered. New iPad.

I had the original iPad when first launched, didn't see the point of it and returned it for a touch instead before giving it a chance.... It great for reading books (you can resume it from any ios device And it remembers your bookmark!) vids on the go, games, photo stream from your iPhone etc.

You can open word and excel attachments from the native mail client, but can't edit them.... Same as on an iPhone.

Just been looking at prices, didn't realise they were that expensive! I could get her a new laptop for that!

So now also looking at Android tablets on Amazon.

Gotta get one - no looking back when you do. I've got an original iPad and love it - if I can't wrestle it off my 7 & 5 year old girls!

It's difficult to turn back after you've bought into the Apple 'brand'.

Everything just gets easier and makes more sense with Apple (over time). Sure it can take a while to get used to, and cost a little more than rival products etc.

iPhone was my first Apple buy. I won't be buying another Windows powered laptop ;)

Only works with HP Envy I've heard, but I've got a basic £50 one and it works a treat.....

Microsoft is allegedly working on an iOS version of Office

Contemplated the MacBook air and then bought the wife an iPad 2, absolutely no going back if you want it for basic stuff. She likes it so much (generally hates computers) that I have had to buy a new iPad for myself - even better with 10% off via a work scheme :D

I wouldn't hesitate recommending it for your other half. Go for it

Ok just about made a decision to buy an iPad, except now can't find anywhere with one in stock. I'm starting to hate Apple already.

Any ideas? Before I go and buy a Galaxy Tab! Ideally need to collect from store as her Birthday is Friday
