still not convinced by the lack of center vents. i use mine an awful lot.

nothing wrong with some dynoc wrap if done right, much easier to do if you dont fancy trying carbon fibre skinning.

is that a mini or a full on ipad?

Mini 4G

I dont like the look of it at all and i cannot see why on earth you would want a touch screen device like an ipad in a car, except if you only plan to use it when stationary....in which case......why?

IMO it just is not a practical solution for a car, but good luck with it if it makes you happy.

Err:
Satellite navigation
Telephone (hands free)
Music
Internet radio stations
Listen to Soundcloud, Youtube, Spotify + various other music channels
Up to date traffic information
Safety camera alerts
Screen for reverse camera
Location services, find petrol stations, hospitals etc etc local to you
Screen for dash cam (accident cam - Go Pro wifi)
Access car diagnostics with wifi/Bluetooth dongle, live info and updates while driving
Voice activation (Siri) to safely control all of the above while driving

+ A never ending list of things I've missed with all the Apps you can get.

iPads are not just for reading books and surfing the net?

I think this will look pretty darn cool!

Agree with others though. Black would look better then CF.

With regards to the glare how about a matt screen protector?

Works well on my mba and can use it in the park in daylight.

Well replied! That way I wont a mini in the dash

I really admire the effort and workmanship that has gone into this. Congratulations.

When I bought my Z4 new, I thought the sat nav TV thingie already looked dated, and it was only going to get more dated with time ... so I chose mine without Satnav. Since then, I have often pondered about cool ways to integrate an iPad mini into the car ... that was the dream of gadget coolness etc. And the way I was going to do it was to buy a SATNAV enclosure, and retrofit an iPad into it. I still think that is preferable to this approach of installing it where the vents go ... because it is more minimal, and leaves the car as per original.

But a funny thing has happened as the years have gone by:

FIRST: today, almost every NEW car has a satnav screen or iDrive-style interface built in ... , so the excitement of a display in the car is not as cool to me as it once was. Everybody has them, kids have them, people on the bus have them. Still useful ... just not as cool. And just like kitchens and bathrooms in houses, these are the first things that are going to show their age in cars ... with interfaces and software that will be out of date in 2 or 3 years time (perhaps less so with an iPad)

SECOND: there is a certain growing attractiveness to me in keeping my Z4 coupe as original as possible. The interior (without satnav) has not aged ... it looks as cool as it did when it was brand new. It just looks pure car. The interior always had a certain Batman retro quality ... the orange LCD lightning, the information displays, even the amazing rear lights which look like 1930s red-hot heater coils. I think THAT is what makes it special ... and the last thing I would want now is to, for example, replace the uber orange infra-red style lighting with white LED lighting which just looks cheap and cold. My iPad mini solution is to fit it in the glove box between the seats - it just fits perfectly there, albeit not to be used when driving.

Just to keep it fully updated, just dropped £100 on some super nice Black Alcantera for the trim piece. I think that with the rest of the bits being carbon hydro dipped it will break the dash up nicely. I will update as things move along :driving:

the onlly problem i can see with any of the satnav/cloud/internet radio stuff i can see is if you dont live where they is decent signal its all pointless. i know i cant use internet radio on m iphone reliably where i live so i wouldnt expect the ipad to be any different.

i kike the idea of it an think it looks good just for some reason just a little bit out of place and not quite right. i cant put my finger on it, maybe the lack of vents? dont know... just not quite right. that being said well done for doing it and getting the fit and all its most certainly not wrong at all.

I know what you mean, visually you recognise the vents and the flush oem head unit...and then they are gone! I just want everything finished now

Sooooo more pics to follow soon but the plans are well under way! I am on holiday from 4th August and when I return all should be complete! The i-pad at this stage will be complemented with a Mechless Alpine Unit (Bluetooth Protocol), some stunning Focal Custom size Components at the front, with a single 6.5 or 8" JL sub behind the seats.

The only thing I am not 100% is the edging between the dash and the i-pad but some custom shield work is still needed to make it tidy!.

:D

I am currently sitting on my balcony in Turkey and I have been getting updated on the install each day. Final pics and vids to come but here are some progress pics
