ill be getting one, but want to play with one in the apple store first, will make a trip next week, i have the iphone for out and about but the ipad will be for around the house mainly for web and music. there is already an american company who are making a single and double din adaptor so they attach to the dash of the car, im keeping an eye on it, i agree nav on that screen would be great!

I'm really tempted to get one, but at that price point it would really be a luxury item I could probably do without. Apple have a habit of releasing products which don't really make an impact until the second generation. As much as I'd love to go out and buy one, I think I'll hold off until the price either goes down (not for a while I guess) or the 2nd gen is released. Especially with the new iPhone just round the corner (expected to be announced 8th June).

Ah, who am I kidding - I'll probably end up buying one the first time I walk in to the Apple store in Glasgow!

Pretty pointless if you ask me.

Then again I dislike Apple and the way they conduct business intensely, so I avoid buying their products at all costs which makes me very biased.

I would get one if they were about half the price they were and I could use it as a universal remote for the home cinema (an area I think the home cinema installers will find significant use for the ipad once they get some IR hardware for it).
More likely that home cinema equipment will be connected to to your home wifi; I use my iPhone for exactly this at the moment. Of course, my home cinema is set up through a MacBook pro (just until I get a mac mini to replace it).

I think people are missing the point of the iPad, I certainly did at first. It's not about catering to a current market, it's creating a new use case;

With the internet becoming more and more integral to our lives, the iPad is about having it right there when you're lounging on the sofa. In a more relaxed format than a laptop, which forces you to sit upright with room to move your arms to type etc.

It'll also be an awesome tool for creatives, architects, accountants... Anyone that has meetings where they may need to present to a client; pull it up on your iPad and hand it over.

It's an absolute game changer, you'll see... 10 years from now, the next generation will not be able to understand how we functioned without such devises.

(edit: corrected a few typos that made it very hard to read!)

I'm finding the device a bit gimicky. I have an iPhone for speedy Internet browsing and a perfectly accepatable laptop for everything else. The Ipad doesn't even offer USB connectivity or Flash. One for the "technology sheep" I think.

Web designers and developers are more likely to adopt HTML 5 now, and anyway when was the last time flash was actually usable on a mobile device that supported it? Nokia smartphones have had it for years and you only have to look at them funny and they give you an out of memory message. Try viewing a flash webpage and the spontaneously combust.

Admit it, anyone that doesn't get the iPad because of lacking support for flash is just upset they won't be able to watch porn on the glorious touch screen.

My two pence =P for what they're worth.

Incidently I won't make any decisions til the 8th June keynote.

x2 Tweed - I think most of the Anti's here don't have full knowledge of what the I-Pad is about.

Read and remember this ....... Behold the beginning of a new era in Computing.

nope, cant see the point :?

Me neither. A perfect example of the public wants what the public gets! I cannot believe people queued all night to get one to be honest.

Not convinced about this. I think it's more like trying to find a market that isn't really there (am willing to be proved wrong though). It's like a lot of the pointless niche cars that get made (ahem X6 - looks great but what's it for?). I thought about getting one for whilst I'm watching tv but then I thought that to stop it from falling off your lap you will have to sit in a particluar way or hold it up. Laptop is more versatile.

Well, this was a complete suprise after starting this thread!!

I got engaged last week and my new Fiance bought me an iPad Friday as an engagement present!!! No ordering or queing! Just went into local PC world and bought one!! 8)

Now you can see why I asked her to marry me!

Typing on it now. After using it for a few days now, yes it is a gimmick and you don't really need one, but you will deep down want one!

Very nice to use. I think the way this device will score is things like digital magazines and media like it. BMW magazine is on as an iPad app now and it's quite cool looking at a digital mag. Wired mag is good and showes the future of what devices like the iPd will be used for. Loads of interactive stuff in the magazine.

Video looks very good on it also.

Some of the games are good also. Need for Speed HD is cool!

I'm enjoying it myself. Watched something on the BBC iPlayer in bed last night. A lot easier to hold and veiw in bed!

One thing. I was expecting it to be a bit bigger than it is. It's smaller than an A4 piece of paper.

Well just played with one in a shop earlier today - must say it is heavier than I thought it would be. All in, it looks lovely, feels comfortable to hold and is very responsive. The web browser is fantastic - browsed to the forum and found it a pleasure to use (like the iphone but much nicer!). Was very tempted to buy one but they only had the 64gb 3g/wifi for £699 - felt it was far too extravagant.

In all honesty, for simple web browsing/etc. I could quite easily see myself using it rather than my desktop computer.

So you have upgraded to M status now then, congrats :D

  Not yet! Sort M Sport status. M status comes next year some time. That's if I think it's any good in the real world of course! :P

I work on computers all day long and when I'm at home, I want a different experience when using the web and a computer for entertainment. So I bought the base model ipad and it's fantastic.
Yes it's a bit pricey, but having the web in your hand without a keyboard hanging off the screen is really nice. The touch screen is so easy to use. It means when I'm at home I can still use a computer, but wherever I like and not adopt the body posture like I'm working.

Caught up on a couple of TV shows on BBC iPlayer in bed last night, and could lay on my side holding it like a book. This was very nice!
Better than laying down watching TV, because the TV will not move to the angle of my head.

I am really impressed and do not see the need for the models with any larger memory unless you are going to download a whole load of video content to entertain you through a holiday maybe?
16gig is more than enough for some music, family photos etc.

I can totally recommend one!

Same here. I use computers all day at work also (systems administrator). Mainly Windows based. One of the reasons I have an iMac at home!! More reliable!! :P

People said the same about the iPhone; what's it's purpose? iPod + Mobile phone is all anyone needs, but look at it's success. Even the iPod, people said "Pffft, I've got my personal cd player, what do I need an iPod for?", but now more people have one (or some variation of one) than don't.

Apple are just very very good at reading people's behaviour and releasing products they didn't know they needed. With clean simple design and well thought-out, researched and executed interaction they become the must-have products. Everyone else just tries (and fails) to replicate them and piggy-back on their process.

The iPad has sold over 2 million units already. That pretty much speaks for itself in terms of whether the market's there or not! :)

I swore blind windows would never take off, i refused to install it on computers at first, i may have been wrong again :)

When I first heard about the ipad I was confused as to what it would be able to do that my PC, laptop, or Iphone could not do, and I saw it as little more than a large cumbersome Ipod Touch.

I dropped into Apple store at the weekend to have a look at the ipad for myself. I was bored within 5 minutes and left the store once again confused as to what it could do that my PC, laptop, or Iphone could not do, and concluded that it as little more than a large cumbersome Ipod Touch.

It's amazing what a advertising and marketing can do. Well done Apple.
