Introducing myself-and Roof Issues

Hi all,

Just introducing myself – I’m Ian and I’ve just joined the forum. It looks like it’ll be a very useful resource as I’ve recently purchased a nice 2006 E85 Z4 2.5 Sport (the silver one in the picture).

I wasn’t actually intending to buy one! My stepson wanted to swap his car for a Z4, so after spending time looking at them with him (his is the grey 2.0 Sport), I started getting the urge myself and ended up buying one too – oops!

I previously owned a Ruby Black 2.5 Sport a few years ago and absolutely loved it, but eventually sold it. Now here I am again!

I picked the car up last weekend and quickly discovered the roof motor was starting to fail. After working through various checks, I replaced the motor and pump yesterday and relocated the motor to the left-hand side of the boot. The original motor was literally sitting knee-deep in water. The threads on here were extremely helpful in guiding me through the job.

The good news is that everything is now working, but I still have one issue:

  • The red roof warning light continues to flash when the roof is fully down.
  • When lowering the roof, the motor seems to want to keep running if I continue holding the button, rather than stopping automatically.

So far I’ve:

  • Checked the parcel shelf/bulkhead microswitch.
  • Removed and refitted it to ensure it was sitting correctly.
  • Had a brief look at the “roof down” microswitch on the passenger-side hinge (the small black switch block).
  • Tried placing a metal object alongside it to simulate the roof being fully stowed.

Unfortunately, the fault remains and I’m a bit stuck now.

Has anyone experienced this before or can point me in the right direction? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ian

Welcome. You’re not far from @bigwinn in Lincoln who sorts roof issues.
However, it sounds like you’ve knocked the hall sensor out of line on the left hinge.
Roof down you can see a small black cube behind the hinge. That’s the up sensor. Hidden underneath it is the down sensor. Needs to be in line with the up one. Hopefully you’ve not snapped it off, which is a common issue when the motor is wrenched out through the boot rather than doing it by simply lifting that side of the roof up.

Thanks, I’ll remove the parcel shelf and have a look-hopefully not snapped the wire off the hall sensor-if I have is it an easy enough fix/a resolder -I may message big win

You won't see much with the parcel shelf out tbh. Best to look down from the top.
Very little wire there to solder to. You will need that side of the roof lifted at a minimum and possibly a new length of loom with the sensor on it.
Fingers crossed it's only moved out of line.

Found the culprit-looked from the top and could see the lower fall sensor was leaning forwards away from its attachment, raised the roof up moulded myself into the boot taking the parcel shelf out, and as you can see in the enclosed pictures the sensor had sheared from its screwed mounting, so put some glue underneath and held it in position for 15 minutes with my hand and heh presto no lights flashing when the roof is fully down-thanks all for your advice!

Well done for reaching it that way!

Welcome to the forum Ian, and congratulations on your unplanned Z4 purchase.

Well done getting your drowned roof motor replaced!

Iain.
