Intro of my car and myself

Dear fellow Z4 lovers,

It's few weeks and just 3 short trips with my 2003 Z4 E85 Sterling grau and I definitely love it! Such a nice car and so much fun riding it! I'm more and more impressed and happy I have it in garage.

I'm looking for info about this car for many months and found this website very useful and the community is very active and with great knowledge of the car. So as I have got the car now, I just wanted to thank you all and start to discuss the issues I'm going to address no my car.

So let me shortly introduce myself: my name is Kamil and I live in Czechia. Working in IT and love to put my hands on the car (if my schedule allows me) the same as driving it. So want to fix and get in OEM state as many as possible.

As I said, the car has born in September 2003 (yeah, round birthday is coming :D ) in sterling grey/grau with 3.0 V6 in manial and is just above 200,000 km (125,000 miles?).
The exterior is quite nice, but there was some works done in the front bumper and probably also on the boot - unfortunately I don't know about last 2 year as the car was not maintained in BMW dealership.
Interior is in black leather w/o navi in good shape, but the drivers seat has leather in the side guide damaged.

From the other issues I know about:
- rust coming on the left door,
- fuel cap not locking and missing security rope (fixed already, was missing the sleeve of the lock pin and bolt and on top was wrongly assembled (strange who did this and why),
- right side mirror not adjusting (motor doesn't run even if I give it a hand), also the glass is with some spots on the reflex layer,
- the drivers seat has nearly hole in the side of it from getting in and out,
- some missing segments in the LCD showing outside temp,
- boot is very heavy (struts was week and already replaces, some minor issue remains)
- some ugly paint on the reinforcement pipes in the motor bay, also the plate holding front bumper need some paint,
- brakes needs also some attention, I want paint the front calipers and not active parts of the disks and the rear brakes will probably need complete replacement.

Uh, that's it... sorry for the long post, just wanted to give you some idea about the car and my expectations and work needs to be done.

Thank you very much for this place!

Welcome to the forum Kamil, don’t worry about the long post, it’s always interesting to hear what someone has bought and the plans they have for it, the only thing missing is a photo of your Z4. It sounds like you have plenty of love for her/him and plan to get it back to it’s former glory

Welcome to the forum a fellow Sterling grey Z4 owner. It's a great colour. As has been said, photos please.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Don’t be upset when you lift up the hood and find it’s not a V6 under there, but a straight 6 - a real gem of BMW engineering.

Thank you guys, for nice welcome... I really appreciate it!

@MikeyH to be honest, as I like the color very much, I was first after maldivian blue :P But at the end I'm happy I ended in sterling grey for a lot of reasons. It's not only a lower attention which is still high for my type of person :?

@Zedebee oh, sorry... oh, sorry... I didn't realize when I say V6 it's not only about the number but also about the position of the cylinders... I'm aware it's straight 6 not V shaped 6... and thank you for correcting me!
I agree, the engine is a gem and it was a must for my Z4 along with manual transmission... I was so shocked, how was the feeling when I had a actually first real ride last weekend. I cannot express how great it was and how much fun I had (and it's not only because of my crappy English :P To give some connotations... my current car is BEV and the one before had automatic transmission :)

Today is very nice and sunny day, hope to have a chance to get some photos for you as it's very good reason to have a short ride :D

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It's good to read that you have been seduced by a straight 6 engine and manual gearbox combination like so many of us on here - enjoy. :driving:

Here are few photos from today :yeah: :driving:

Thank you! It's still a lot of work to make it as I want it to be... at least:

  • new left wing (rust is coming)
  • M seats in red
  • change rear brakes and paint all calipers in red
  • do renovation of headlight - I love the angel eyes like this
  • also do some hidden work like anti rust conservation of the chassis and rear of the car, new paint of reinforcement tubes and some metal parts in the motor bay - maybe purchase something like this
  • proper cleaning and waxing

I envy you that you have such easily available and cheap spare parts in the UK. I could have the wing and seats this week beeing in the UK

After some time I finally did some (tiny) improvments. This time in the engine bay.

You can consider this "find 2 differences" game :D

For solution, click on this text and drag the mouse pointer all over till the worlds "stop here" below:
I did paint job on the reinforcement tubes and added missing nut cover on the engine cover.
...stop here.

Only spotted the engine bars.....a job on my to do list along with the ones behind the front grill
