Intravee - which iPod works best...?

PM RichardP, he is part of that forum and knows all that is to know about Intravee and BMW.

I've got both of the mods PDF'd somewhere I think. I keep contemplating one or the other. I think the newest one being the single wire is the suggested choice now.

I tried the calendar option but it didn't seem to work. Could just be the battery went completely flat in the iPod.

Certainly the iPod Touch in our Honda wakes up when you start the car. Might be a function of the Kenwood system that's in there though, but I've never had to wake up the iPod.

The issue here is between the iPod and the Alpine KCA-420i - effectively they both wait for the other one to decide that it's time to wake up!

Another issue is a full drained iPod. A flat iPod will not be charged by the Alpine.

I have a dedicated cigarette lighter charger to get enough charge in the iPod to get the Alpine to take over later on again.

This is because the iPod can't wake up enough to let the Alpine unit know that it's there and break the stalemate.

As I understand it, the single wire mod overcomes this as it causes the KCA to supply 12v on the charging line whenever the ignition is on (this is stepped down to 5v by the charging adapter if used) - the charging cycle is then controlled by the iPod just as though it were left connected to a normal charger

Yes, you are right on that.

It is not really an issue for me as my iPod is accessible and I just press the button to get it going.

It lasts about a month in the car without being charged and I can still wake it up enough for the Alpine to start charging it. After the winter season I have no hope as it will have properly died by then.

Just had a very sad email from Intravention Electronics about the death of the Intravee's creator, Simon Allen.

From the email it looks like Support for Intravees will be very limited going forwards, not that that matters in the scheme of things. Have to say I love mine & am very grateful he made a great product :)

With agreement from RichardP posted:

"Hello,

I’m RichardP from the Intravee forum; I’ve been involved with the Intravee on a non-commercial basis since it was first available and I am a moderator on the forum.

As some of you may have noticed the Intravee web site and forum have been unavailable since the start of last week end. It is with great sadness that I must inform you that Simon Allen, the owner of Intravention Electronics and the designer of the Intravee, passed away suddenly on Friday 23rd November. Simon was a highly talented individual who will be greatly missed by anyone that knew him.

Intravention Electronics was run entirely by Simon, with a little help from a few enthusiastic volunteers, the entire computer infrastructure was based at his home and run and maintained by him. Although I do not yet know any details of what may happen in the future, as of Friday evening it would appear that the computers running the Intravention web site have been shut down. There is currently no access to the forum, web site, software library or support e-mail. I have only been able to e-mail you because I had a backup of the forum users with Customer, or higher, access permissions. The future of the Intravee product is, at best, unclear.

The Intravee hardware itself is generally very reliable indeed; the only hardware problem I am aware of is that it is possible to blow the internal fuse. I have a quantity of these fuses and can supply them if required. It may be technically possible to continue with Intravee production as the manufacturing facility has all the details, legally and financially it may be a different story.

The Intravee release firmware is reasonably bug free, but only supports the Professional Nav system to any significant degree. The pre-release V6.02 firmware is also generally quite stable; the very latest build 6.02-6940 is a significant upgrade to V6.01 with support for Business Radio, Business Nav and MID. I have copies of the various pre-release firmware builds and, again, can supply this on request.

It may be possible for me to do some limited development on the Intravee firmware, however this would have to be done in my spare time and so the scope would be quite limited. I have the source code and the knowledge of the Intravee, iBus and AI-Net to continue development – however, what I do not have is the ability to compile the source code to create the firmware file. Simon used a version of a compiler that he modified, it may not be possible to obtain or use this compiler.

I apologise for the unsolicited e-mail, but thought that there would be many users that would like to know the situation. If you would like to be removed from receiving any future e-mails please reply to this e-mail with “Remove” as the subject line, otherwise I will endeavour to keep you informed of any developments. In the meantime, if you have any questions or problems, please e-mail me directly.

Richard"

:(

Was reading a similar thread on DW last night, very sad.

I've just send Richard an email asking for the latest firmware and details of the single wire mod so that he is not harassed by lots of forum members. If he has no objection I will make both available to forum members.

As requested by Steve, here are the details of the single wire KCA-420i mod.

It's really quite simple, you just need to have a good quality small tip soldering iron and a steady hand. You'll need a 1 or 1.5 mm drill to break the track at the via, no need to drill right through. Using fine, 30 AWG, solid core Kynar wire will make the job much easier, you can buy it on e-bay usually called 'modding wire'.

This is the section of the board, it's on the left side with the iPod socket at the top.

With this mod the KCA-420i will be able to charge an iPod even if it's battery is totally flat and it will wake up any iPod.

I'll try and set something up with regard to the firmware, people will need the firmware and downloader program, if they do not have it already.

If anyone has any Intravee questions or problems, or just wants to be kept in the loop regarding the future of the Intravee, e-mail me at [email protected]

Richard

Thanks for that Richard

I have all the software and don't mind hosting the files if that's OK with you.
