international space station

Probably one of, if not the greatest engineering achievement to date.

Most things can be called a waste of money if you look at them honestly.

I'm glad we are part of this sort of thing.

Working in the research world. I hear what you say about spending billions and could it be spent better.

Well I will just say that the building i work in many years ago a guy was doing research in to x rays. He didn't know where the technology would go but he wanted to find out about them. He built (for the time) very expensive and never been done before equipment.

I doubt there are not many of us who haven't benefited from his hard work. Some times understanding something can lead to life changing technologies. But you have to look at a much bigger picture and play a very long game.

There sketchy about what exactly there doing when I read up about it once ,"research" and "looking for other worlds "

It fascinates me TBH so much so I was trying to spot it in the sky during the summer but no joy .. :headbang:

There's a free app called ISS Spotter that tells you where the ISS is at any given time, and also when it will pass over your location... As well as your chances of seeing it given the cloud cover. It's really cool, even shows you the direction it's coming from in the sky.

Or just look for the Santa tracker - its actually the ISS but telling kids its Santa's sleigh is pretty cool

linky

Its not (that im aware of) hurting anyone so in the grand scheme of things i don't see why we shouldn't explore space.

There are plenty of people in this world with more money than they can probably ever spend that could probably quite easily wipe out most/all of world debt.

One in particular which i found whilst browsing highly paid peoples...

If we spent more money on advancing science and exploration, than trying to kill each other the World would be a much better and safer place to live

Isn't that the truth!! Its a shame the people with the power like war so much!!

Unfortunately, a lot of technical leaps are due to investment in wars - space exploration is a direct consequence of the German investment in ballistic weaponry, aircraft development enjoyed major advancements before (during the arms race) and during WW2, all nuclear sciences were a direct consequence of the investment on all sides to create atomic weapons... it would be fantastic if we could have teh same technological leaps without the conflicts, but if it wasn't for the war's, I doubt humankind would invest in technology - especially in today's society where the betterment of humankind is never at the forefront. Today, its all about personal gain, and the "here and now", not the future.

Humankind needs to get its collective head out of its arse and look beyond to what we could achieve, if only we have the courage to invest, support and nurture initiatives like the ISS.

Just seen this on the news

I just don;t get it. I dread to think how much money is spent on it all and why?

Because it is hard!

Nice Kennedy quote there, MrPT

I like it, although it was a little contrived when you consider the context that you describe in your post. I agree completely... we must pursue these things, be they frontiers of science, medicine, culture, technology etc. Otherwise what is the point of anything?! :?

Not looking for it, sat in the lounge watching tele and it just flew right past the window above Cornwall. Wish I had been ready for it could have snapped a photo. Still nice to see it again any how. :D
