Hi everyone

Being over 13 years old, my 2006 E85 Z4M unsurprisingly needs some new trim - specifically the rear console cover - No.2 on attached which has a broken handle so will not opens-l500.png
BMW want £160 for this hinged plastic cover - which is not even M specific!!!

Can anyone advise me of any better value spares suppliers. I've tried some second hand searches that have turned up nothing, but maybe there are some companies that specialize in Z4s? Any advice appreciated!

You can have mine for half that and I'd be happy :) I have all those pieces in the exploded diagram in excellent condition should you need any others. Postage to sa may be a cost issue? Drop me a pm. Tom

The cover No.2 is just that...a cover. It doesn't hinge open to reveal a storage compartment as I think you suspect it does. This link on how to remove all the centre console may be useful and may also shed some light on what is concealed behind it  https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/BMW_Z4M/163-INTERIOR-Center_Console_Replacement/163-INTERIOR-Center_Console_Replacement.htm

I thought the same, the upper 'button' does nothing, however I suspect he's talking about the lower part (it's all one piece) which allows the access to the cubby/cd changer etc..

I may be in error here, but I think the door/button on the cover that that the OP is referencing, is the manual release for the manual soft top lock release (see attached pic) which is enabled/disabled with the central locking system. ...the larger cover (item 1) has a mechanical solenoid system (item 18 and or 10) attached to its backing that moves up and down to release that door latch.

my z4 (2006) does not have that lock and there was a plastic ring holding the solenoid plunger up to keep that door latch from opening - not sure if the soft top lock (circled in yellow) was only on earlier models, or just removed by previous owner (in my case)

therefore, it is my belief that if you do not have that soft top locking mechanism (circled in yellow) on yours, then the door latch in question is meant to be locked closed.
