Intermittent starting issue - 2.5i

Hi all, hoping I can get some clarity on an issue.

Over the course of a couple of months, this issue has been presenting itself and got increasingly common, even after ruling things out. The car is a 2003 E85 2.5i if this helps.

It may be good as gold for days, even weeks at a time, then back to square one.

I start the car, it cranks, but doesn’t fire. Occasionally it’ll turn over but die out instantly before even idling, and the more it’s tried then it doesn’t even fire, just cranks.

It’s had a new fuel pump + filter, and fuel pump relay, as these were the things my mechanic thought would be the issue. Bearing in mind, the first two times it was with him it fired straight away when he was looking into it, so didn’t have much to play with in terms of diagnostics. Whenever it does happen though and the RAC come out, they’ve said there’s no fuel pressure… which is bizarre.

It happened the other week, actually took the fuel pump fuse out and back in again, fired straight away.

Yesterday it happened again, tried the above, wiggled the relay, and nothing. I saw an article about the ignition switch - and one gent told the poster to put the key in position 1, then turn to pos 2, sit for a few seconds (eg, as you would to put your seatbelt on kind of thing) and then fire. I tried this and worked on the spot.

Today however, absolutely none of the above has worked so I’m completely unsure what avenue to go down when the car is eventually dropped with my mechanic. Is it worth popping a new ignition switch in, as I’ve heard it’s a cheap and easy fix? Is there a way to tell if it’s the switch, once taken out?

Appreciate any help and suggestions!

Could be ignition switch which is a common issue.

I had to replace mine after car would crank but not fire. What I noticed was at position 2 there would be no ignition lights so there for when turning to 3 to crank that’s all it would do.

I bought a used one from the breakers in. Sheffield via eBay for around a tenner and it’s been fine ever since.

Have you put a code reader on it, it may have codes set which may point you in the right direction to fix this issue.

I see! Useful to know. I still have ignition lights on in pos 2, could this still be the case?
